I concur with your assessment. |

Understated rather than underwhelming, I'd say. Don't worry though, in the interests of authenticity, if you're American you dont have to watch it for a couple of years unless you really want to (in which case you'll have to pretend to be a Canadian). |

Judging by the waves rolling along the sea wall and the sand and foam being blown by the wind, I feel the weather reports of May 1940 were not consulted in the making of the trailer… Oak |

Very pristine, anyway, they'll never replace John Mills (Tubby) |

Mean, Goonfighter… I think this looks interesting. Obviously, there's going to be a fair old sprinkle of artistic license, even with something as sacrosanct to the British as the weather… ;) At least this appears to be a major WW2 film portraying events before the US became involved; we don't see too many of those anymore. I think it takes some courage to make such a movie. I hope it does well outside the UK though, as it would be a shame if the story of Dunkirk is not exposed to a wider audience. Nolan should be congratulated for taking it on, but I hope he does it justice. |

Goonfighter……are you thinking of Dieppe, by any chance…..your comment makes no sense to me otherwise. |
Goonfighter | 05 Aug 2016 8:59 a.m. PST |
Dave – no, not Dieppe, I'd read that some Americans who volunteered to join the Commonwealth forces pretended to be Canadians to do so. I agree, it's going to have to be good to beat the John Mills film. I did wonder if the beach scenes with the "weather" were some kind of aftermath. But regardless, I'd really hope it does the story justice, especially the rearguard holding the perimeter. |

Please,at least its acknowledged to even exist.I'm sure I can say the name at work and people will say "who's that?". |
Goonfighter | 05 Aug 2016 1:54 p.m. PST |
Well, we were discussing it in work and the ladies in the team knew it. Maybe they're Harry Stiles fans but our 17 yr old summer work placement knew it and he's not a stiles fan. |

I'm very interested to see how the story is spun. I liked the teaser and I'm sure it will look good. I do wonder the angle the script it going to hit the event from. I suspect you do actually need to be British to romance the tale. I'm wondering if it's going to continue the tradition of how this rout and evacuation is some form of victory. Looks like it might be. I'm hoping it might be a little more than that. Attenborough's treatment of Arnhem is far more sophisticated than how most 'war movies' seem to be being told in recent times. Now, if you want to make a movie about a defeat in WWII I vote for Crete 1941 – my Grandfather was there and it's a much. much more dramatic event and a close run battle. |
PiersBrand | 05 Aug 2016 4:03 p.m. PST |
My Grandfather at Dunkirk may disagree that Crete was more dramatic. |

And as is often the case with WW2 the discussion devolves into "my grandfather was better than your grandfather" debates. |
