I'm mostly a DBA player short on space and time. Can Dux Brittaniarum be played on a board less than 4x4 ft? Would I have to reduce figure scale, move distances etc?

The moves and ranges are designed for a 6x4 table.
If you used cm instead of inches, (and smaller scale figures) that would work.

No need to hack the distances as much as that, but switching to 15mm figures and reducing distances by a third (effectively making a 4x3 table equivalent to 6x4.5) would probably be a good solution.

Sorry – wrong rule set – disregard.

HObhood, here is a previous discussion on using 15mm for Dux Brit.

Thanks everyone – and Wulfgar for directing me to the other thread.

Absolutely. Use Splintered Light 15mm figures (mounted individually, or on unit bases with some method to keep track of casualties), and either make your own ruler with scaled down "inches" or just use cm's. SL already do packs that are Dux Brit friendly, but they are also great about custom pack requests. They also have a bunch of leader/hero/civilian figures. Peter Pig for buildings, and Donnington for animals/carts etc.

I was going to do this at first … but then megalomania set in and I just made big 15mm figure units with the same footprint as the 25mm units! :)

Cheers,

Christopher

Just one more thing – If I can mount 28mm figures on 1 penny size bases – which I have been able to do – what's wrong with using this figurescale but with the reduced movement/shooting rates on a smaller board? Is it just the look of it? Or would villages etc simply take up too much space? I'd compromise the visual reality a bit to use the figure scale I like..

The downside of that is simply the loss of room for maneuver – effectively your units are getting a bigger footprint, so you're more likely to end up with a straight forward slogging match, as flanks are smaller and harder to manoeuvre around, which for a game often centred on raiding rather than pitched battle could throw the balance out.

Hobhood4, I'm looking at much the same situation, myself. I'm midway through a project for Dux Bellorum, and just purchased Dux Brit because, well, just because it looks so awesome.

My Dux Bellorum troops are Legio-Heroica 15's mounted in two rows of four per 40x30mm stand. Lights are different, of course. In Dux Bel, I want two stands to make a unit.

My table is, like yours, a bit too small for Dux Brit in 28mm. Its a 4x3, and I don't want a bigger one.

Saxon, Footsore, and Gripping Beast make the most amazing figures for the era that one could hope for. It's easy to empathize with your desire to give them a try. I'm thinking that if you want to paint those 28's, you should go for it, and sort out the details of the game later on.

For myself, I've decided that once my Dux Bellorum project is painted, I'll add a few single mounted castings for the leaders and heroes for Dux Brit. Each of my 15mm stands can represent the groupings of six for the Dux Brit games. I'm thinking it won't really matter if I'm using eight to a group rather than six, and with 15mm, using centimeters shouldn't be a problem.

If it all goes south, I still have my Dux Bellorum game, which is also pretty snazzy.

Hopefully more advice on this will follow from others with more Dux Brit experience. It's a fun project, and probably my last, so working through these minor issues is part of the fun.

I may decide to paint up just a few of those beautiful 28's for use with "Song of Arthur and Merlin," just to cap off the project.^^

Using undersized buildings (even a scale step down), and half rates for movement and range can make the table seem bigger. Figure footprint is still a potential issue, especially for unit sized groups.

Using cm instead of inches also makes the table bigger, and no maths need to convert. Just use a cm tape instead of an inch one

I play quite a lot of my games on small tables. The biggest change in game play I have found is that I lose the preliminary movements at the start of the game. The smaller table means the forces start much closer to each other, so the action is sharp and bloody. A different feel to things.
