Bonjour Mes Amis,

I need some help chaps.

I'm soon to acquire 8 Front Rank Spanish 28 mm artillery pieces and read somewhere that the Spanish in the Peninsula war relied on draught-oxen to pull them.

Does anyone know if that was really the case?

Also, if it was can anyone recommend what the 28mm oxen options are?

I know that Front Rank do one but, nice though it is, I'm not sure that I want 32 in the same pose!

Has anyone even done some Spanish oxen teams?

I reckon that these once done could be useful for my India project too.

Cheers,

Paul

I have a "generic" front Rank oxenteam in my collection, they look quite nice.

If I ever get around to the Spanish, there will be oxen teams.

I read elsewhere in past TMP Napoleonics Message Board entries (try the snazzy Search function) that oxen are not common in most of Spain, unlike mules. While some artillery may have had oxen to pull them, many more mules were used in place of horses and oxen.

Considered using mule teams as well? Another good Iberian War of Independence option for modelers!

Some Spanish artillery were pulled by horses, most were pulled by mules, a few (probably the very heavy pieces) by oxen.

For my 6mm army I used horses for the horse artillery and oxen for the foot artillery. I wanted to use mules but I couldn't find any mule teams in 6mm.

Hinchliffe do oxen as well in 25/28mm, I have a team of four.

Perrys WR26 will give you a team of four and a chap in a very fetching pair of tights. He does have the excuse that this is War of the Roses, but nice oxen.

They also make better eating than mules

BTW, for all our bricole jokes, has anyone ever modelled gunners using the wretched things? Never mind oxen, I'll bet there was more man hauling in Spain!

Mes Amis,

Thanks for your help.

I shall consider mules!

Cheers,

Paul
