I propose a simple rule, which will not fit in the title.
"Should anyone who posts in a single Napoleonic Discussion more than 10 times get an automatic DH of 3 days?" grin
How many times does it take to make your point? Particularly if all you are doing is attacking the veracity of someone else's source?

Anyway, I propose a few choices.
1. You are getting tedious. Shut up and cool off.
2. 1st Amendment! No limits on postings.
3. Let them go. They amuse me.
4. Bricoles were invented by Helmuth Von Bricole in the Austrian army in 1764.
5. Bricoles were invented by Etienne de Bricole in 1788.
6. We don't need more boobies. They're all over Napoleonic Discussion.

Seriously though….
Could it be that TMP members are fighting back with non-DH ridicule? It's an art that more and more are learning.

Chokidar03 Aug 2016 5:55 a.m. PST

Absolutely….

jeffreyw303 Aug 2016 6:07 a.m. PST

I would say five should do the trick--not 10--would also force posters to do their research first.

These tend to drag on because, as noted, certain members are acquiring the art of being pointedly annoying while staying within TMP rules. I understand some wanting to celebrate this level of skill, but when combined with an overwhelming and unconquerable desire to have the last word in every single thread, we quickly get unreadable messes.

Five will be fine.

"…certain members are acquiring the art of being pointedly annoying while staying within TMP rules."

Exactly. I wasn't involved with that thread but the individual concerned continued to bait others and subtly encouraged their participation by being crass and rude; staying right on the edge of the 'rules'.

TMP is different than other sites I belong to: that thread would have been cut or at the very least a Moderator would have posted and advised caution.

It's a fine line applying rules to everyone in order to police a few who take advantage.

daler240D03 Aug 2016 6:19 a.m. PST

a public moderation system where people can thumbs up or thumbs down a post would absolutely transform TMP into the greatest site in the world.

Mick the Metalsmith03 Aug 2016 6:40 a.m. PST

How bout just ignoring that which annoys you. Censorship is a slippery slope

Well said, after all, no one is forced to read or respond to posts they agree or disagree with. I think it's called freedom of choice.

What was the DH dust-up about? Has the thread been nuked?

Who asked this joker03 Aug 2016 7:26 a.m. PST

Before I can answer, someone needs to tell me EXACTLY what a "bricole" is. evil grin

Sophism and Huff-Puffery I say….:)

M C MonkeyDew03 Aug 2016 7:48 a.m. PST

Getting around the rules is an age old human response to rules. Most won't but some will. Making the rules more Draconian won't help.

Just ignore the (forum)rules-lawyers and carry on.

No,not nuked, far from it,closing in on 300 posts and still going.

I'm picturing Our Editor sitting behind his massive desk, stroking his white Persian, and chuckling evilly:

"If only they knew what's in store for them. Heh! Heh! 42? Just wait. . ."

Joker-
"Before I can answer, someone needs to tell me EXACTLY what a "bricole" is."

Bricole is a vegetable popular in the USA that is frequently found served with Cowlaflower. Some people like to squirt Lemin juice on it for added taste. Also popularly served as a Chinese take-out food, Chikin and Bricole.

Hafen von Schlockenberg03 Aug 2016 9:57 a.m. PST

Please,ZOC,this is a serious discussion!

Joker,I'd like to answer that question,if I may,in two ways.
First:

And second(or is it third?):

Pick one (another poll suggestion,perhaps?)

Maybe like Winston and the OFM. . .?

Zippee03 Aug 2016 10:18 a.m. PST

Nope
1. Is a good rule of thumb :)
2. This isn't the USA so there is nothing to amend
3. why not – amusement isn't mandatory though
4. Factually incorrect
5. Factually irrelevant
6. Factually irresponsible

Old Contemptibles03 Aug 2016 10:29 a.m. PST

3. Let them go. They amuse me.

Ah! But separately Winston and OFM can do no wrong! Perhaps separately they are a sort of reverse bricole?

Bricole is a vegetable popular in the USA that is frequently found served with Cowlaflower.

I like mine in a cheese sauce or a cheese soup.

Hafen von Schlockenberg03 Aug 2016 10:48 a.m. PST

"Reverse bricole"?! That I'd like to see.

Then,if they meet,it's like matter/antimatter? Good Lord!

But they are the "sexiest human beings on earth". About that there can be no dispute.

Who asked this joker03 Aug 2016 10:57 a.m. PST

I AM the sexiest person on earth. I have tons of references to back that up.
So is the OFM. I'll tell him next time I see him.

79thPA Supporting Member of TMP03 Aug 2016 11:15 a.m. PST

Thanks. I read the thread when it only had something like five posts. I never would have figured it would have turned so sour.

Old Contemptibles03 Aug 2016 11:20 a.m. PST

The most entertaining parts of TMP has been slowly eroding away. The multitude of boards is the main culprit. A prime example of this is the Empire board.

This group of Empire players made the Napoleonic Discussion Board very lively indeed. Now that those guys are exiled into their own little world, the Napoleonic Discussion Board is much less interesting.

Now, a mandatory DH sentence for providing immense entertainment is suggested? On the contrary, this kind of activity should be encouraged and celebrated.

Some of the funniest, most entertaining threads have been on the Napoleonic Discussion Board. I am most definitely for 3. "Let them go. They amuse me." Rather it should be, Let them stay. They are immensely entertaining.

Hafen von Schlockenberg03 Aug 2016 11:33 a.m. PST

+1 Rallynow. Sour? Apparently a matter of burning interest and personal pride for some. Speaking for myself, haven't been so amused since the last time I browsed prices in a GW catalog.

(Sorry. Couldn't help myself. No slur intended toward GW fans. Getting Dawghoused while posting about Dawghousing would be the ultimate humiliation.)

Say,it just occurred to me--there are now three active threads discussing another thread. A record?

IF only you could keep the discussion on the same topic/question for any length of time, the limit could be held to one or two posts… instead of the birdwalking one sees in any normal discussion…

It should work. We all know that the Napoleonic wars is a relatively simple subject…

Ben Avery03 Aug 2016 4:23 p.m. PST

Absolutely a 3.

I was one of those 'Dog-housed' or 'in the Kenne'l as we know it as over here. I was away for a long weekend break, got back Tuesday afternoon to find the dog-face on my page. I looked up what I did wrong and found out that I had a day and a half still to serve, though I don't know what the original sentence time was.

7. There's already a harassment rule. Just hit the complaint button and identify the series of posts that are not adding to the conversation.

Post count is a horrible metric for misbehaviour. If somebody posts ten times in a thread and is discussing different relevant aspects of the topic, then that is a legitimate and structured argument.

I know this is a joke, but it has an aura of sadness about it. I think it would be fair to say that I was one of the more active contributors to the Napoleonic boards, up to perhaps six or seven years ago or so. I'm not alone in having almost completely abandoned them, except for the occasional short question – although that's also more-or-less true of my activity on TMP in general. It's an unfortunate truth that it is the nature of small, poorly moderated forums that they can be dominated by a few loud, contrarian voices. In Napoleonics, some of those voices quite literally have been chasing themselves through various fora for decades. Having to put up with pseudo-academic posturing is my day job – I don't see why I should inflict it upon myself in my hobby! However, it is a real shame, when one remembers what a broadly inclusive, active board this started out as, albeit over a decade ago. It's no wonder that hobby discussions have fragmented into more focused forums run by rules designers.

Good Gaming,

Christopher

This board is for the discussion of Napoleonic Miniatures Wargaming, so so it is described. I simply do not understand what 283 posts over 6 pages has to do with drum majors in the context of miniature wargaming. Personally the whole question is of no interest to me or to wargaming with miniatures

Some members were debating an unusual topic, which was diverted into another topic, and some members got the hump over it. That's all. Nothing new really, it happens all the time. And it resulted in some members being dawghoused for what they put in their posts. But the thread is still alive, although the topic no longer appears to be being discussed.

14Bore04 Aug 2016 11:31 a.m. PST

No. Not every back and forth is a argument

Weasel04 Aug 2016 12:00 p.m. PST

I think all existing rules should be discarded.

Instead, each day Bill randomly picks a member to DH for a few days.

It'll give the usual suspects a chance to recover and the person that gets picked probably did something wrong anyways.

Also, its a hat. It's just a hat.

jeffreyw304 Aug 2016 2:20 p.m. PST

300 posts! Can this be combined with the "Last Word " thread?

"The Last Word on TMP Drum Majors"?

Gazzola06 Aug 2016 4:14 a.m. PST

Chad47

Many topics and boards on this website are of no interest to me. Luckily, members can chose which to read and in which to post.

Why have members chosen to 'debate' (I've used the word debate loosely here) for over 300 posts on an unusual subject such as drum majors and how long it would take to learn to play the drums under the stress of combat, might make an interesting topic. However, I fear it would become endless because no one would agree on why? LOL
