I have SYW armies and play brigade level games. Looking at some regimental rules now. Of the two above are they similar in complexity and time of play? Not looking for comments on which you prefer or on other rule sets. |

I have played both although Age of Reason was quite a while ago. Neither of the two sets are very complicated although AoR has an old school remove the casualties and a funny divide the die result by 6 or 12 to determine the casualties. Honours of War doesn't have that but runs markers and then removes the whole unit. AoR does come with a campaign and siege system (it should be said I have both the original version and the one that followed it and not any later editions) which is quite useful and the orders of battle and unit ratios which I liked. I also particularly liked in the first edition all of the maps so you can determine the table tops. HoW has a short number of scenarios in the book but they players have a scenario section on the webpage which you can look at. On the whole though I prefer Honours of War with its initiative rolls and simpleness of the game. I have found the balance to be pretty good in the game and once you commit your forces to get stuck in you are less able to control what happens. The rules are very cheap and available and I think easy to learn to play. Both play in about the same timeframe although I recollect that in AoR it takes longer for the units to go away after taking casualties. Both run a basic percentage of losses mean end of game which is about 50% for HoW and 33% from memory for AoR. AoR inspired me to play SYW and after a long lull HoW has reignited my passion for the period and I am once again building SYW armies. Personally I think HoW a little more dynamic and so far is good fun. I would lean that way. For the cost I would get the rules as they are so cheap and if they don't suit then have a look at AoR. |

There will be a 3rd Edition of AoR released within the next few weeks. I have only played AOR, but I do enjoy the rules greatly. |

I've read both HoW and AoR. From a simplcity standpoint, HoW wins hands down. It is a low page count set of rules. The version of AoR was hard for me to understand yet the QRS seemed easy enough to follow. I think the way the rules were organized kinda threw me. I generally like Todd Kershner's rules but this one didn't grab me. |

Thanks. AOR 3rd edition is already listed on OMM. I thought it was published already. |
