Would French officers or grenadiers wear powdered wigs?
How about normal soldiers?
And what about Lauzun's Legion?

What color are the animal skin backpacks?

Merci

Would the bearskin bags of the Royal Deux Ponts grenadiers be blue or yellow?

Having picked up some Perry French AWI at the end of last year, this topic / questions has me interested as well. I don't recall any powdered wigs on French during the FIW, but thing could have changed.

Thanks for the questions and post John.

Looking forward to the replies.

From "The Era of The American Revolution" by the Company of Military Historians.

French regiments at Savannah, 1779: Officers are shown in powdered wigs, Line infantry and Grenadiers in un-powdered hair. Backpacks are a light brown.

French Soissonnais infantry, 1780-83: Officers and Grenadiers in powdered wigs, line infantry unpowdered.

Royal Deus-Ponts Regiment: Officers White wigs.

Hope this helps
Dave

Hey, question for reenactors -- what DO you guys use for powdered wigs/queues for this period? And is whatever you do period authentic?

FWIW, if they did powder in America (Savannah? Really?) , for the men at least, I susepct when formal parades required they would simply have worn wear hair combed, greased and powdered.

The COMH book, published forty years ago, is quite old and venerable now. It is possible that some of their information is be a little out of date.

@piper909 – normal baking flour was used in "the real thing" so I would suspect the same would be true today.
