Afternoon fellow gamers,

It was back to back Naval at the home of Yarkshire Gamer, this week I dug down to the bottom of the Fleets and dug out the Pre Dreadnoughts, Early Battlecruisers and the Armoured Cruisers backed up by the worst Light forces I could muster.

Great fun as usual, Germans lost a LC and a DD, the British lost 5 DD.

The Pre Dreadnoughts vs Early British Battlecruisers match up is an interesting one, similar guns in different numbers, heavy armour and low speed vs Light armour and high speed. Less hits likely on the BC but we all know what one hit in the wrong place could do to those ships. One to return too.

The garbage units are always fun to play.

Wow! Great battle, and an interesting concept. I never expected to be able to ask this with regard to ships of this scale,,but has Frauenlob gained a funnel for this game?

Ssssh Mollinary,

Don't tell the pedants !

No one makes a Frauenlob model that I know of, I had to improvise.

Nice game and yeah, it's fun to dig out the "garbage" tier troops once in a while.

They might surprise you!

Panzerschiffe seem to offer one in 1:2400?

Call me fussy but Panzerschiffe are very blocky and lacking detail compared to the WTJ / GHQ lines plus I would have to pay import tax and duty for 1 ship.

We may end up making one like we have with Engadine but until then….

The Viking Forge "Nymphe" is also a decent model of the Gazelle class (which includes Frauenlob). I like it better than the Panzerschiffe model, and it's more in scale with the WTJ, GHQ and C-in-C models.

You'll just have to order the entire class to minimize per-unit shipping costs. :-)

I actually prefer some Panzerschiffe cruisers and DDs to GHQ. Some of the GHQ models look weirdly disproportionate. When Panzerschiffe gets the proportions right and the guns all visible, they can look really nice with a little bit of superdetailing (masts, anchors, chains, boats, portholes, rust, etc.), and it's hard to beat the purchase price and durability.

Unfortunately for us British, Viking Forge is out of reach too, $5 USD for the ship, reasonable, $23 USD minimum charge for postage, plus I have to pay £8.00 GBP or another $11 USD to UK customs, I love my Naval but no way am I paying $39 USD for 1 Light Cruiser.

Will probably end up making one.

$23 USD shipping? Oof! You just need to get 200 of your closest friends to split an order…

I'd carve one too.

One of the more frustrating things about naval gaming is that in the modern era, it is never economically worthwhile to carve your own master and then cast copies, because there were rarely more than 5 of any class of largeish warship (CA, BB etc).

So if a model is inaccurate, or depicts the ship in the wrong fit for your chosen era, or is just not available, you'll easily spend $39 USD and more on the materials you'll use casting a better one. You can't get the cost per unit down very far by casting more because historically, there probably never were more.

So this seems like a very good way to go.

Incidentally, I always feel that no battle of the garbage is complete without the presence of SMS Wörth, a teeny (~370-foot) German coastal BB of 1892 with six 28cm guns, but of two different lengths and not the same as those fitted to the later ships.

SMS Worth sadly isn't in my collection, nice armour, top speed just above walking pace, nice.

I will solve the Frauenlob issue very cheaply, by using a scalpel !

Regards as always Ken

Or…you could just use something you have and call it the Frauenlob. No, wait…you did that. Hahaha! I'm not above doing that myself, for one stinkin' ship. Great blog and nice ships!

Cheers Rob,

In my defence I did use a ship that is virtually identical apart from the extra funnel.

PANIC OVER ! I have removed one of the funnels with my mighty scalpel and repainted the gap. All is well.

Just need to check that I cut the right one off :-)

Tumbling dice may be your salvation. I believe they are due to release some later pre dreadnaught stuff!
