Don't worry about the grid, place markers of some kind, pebbles, grass tufts on circular bases, whatever. It dosn't have to be a permanent thing. Give em a go, you'll like the rules.

This is the only rules we currently use. You don't even really notice the grid when playing. Some mats are hardly noticeable at all. No fiddly measuring speeds up play tremendously. |
