I'm looking at building an 1813 allied force and was wondering which line of figures to use for Russian Infantry. Putting aside price, I'd appreciate any reflections on the best quality of figure available. I'm particularly looking at Front Rank (reinforcement packs in march pose) or Perry plastics. For best look and ease of painting what would you suggest? Thanks!

My vote goes for the Front Rank castings.

Not a fan of Front Rank, lovely detail, but a bit 'fat'!
I'm a big fan of Elites range of 1812 Russians, he does earlier, too, if you want to mix it up s bit. Lovely figures, full of life.

Some of the recent (last 10 years) front rank are not big at all.

I saw some of their "reinforcement" figures and they were the highest quality.
Some of their older figs are a bit barrell chested but the new stuff is pretty close to excellent. A Freumd of mine has some Russian Infabtry and artillery. Very tasty.

The old Foundry Range, the last major Napoleonic range from the Perry's at Foundry is really very good for late Russians, unfortunately there are a few gaps in the range. I am also a huge fan of Front Rank, they are very crisp and neat with little cleaning to do and they paint up rather easily. Look at the latest "reinforcement range" of front rank, some of their best. (Half my Russian inf are Foundry, other half are Front rank)

If you google "perry Russian infantry tmp", you can find other, informative threads.

I find the three best, particularly for the march attack pose to be: Perry plastics/metal; Front Rank Reinforcements; and Foundry. (I have all of these in a single unit, btw).

Foundry are a bit chubbier, and the faces are easier to paint, but they're very nice. Also if you need greatcoats for 1814).

Perry figures are similar in approach to Foundry, but they are a bit smaller, with lots of detail. Faces, in particular on the plastics, are pretty delicate. The plastics have the advantage of separate heads and sword/sheath/backpack. The former makes painting march attack easier, as you can clearly paint the left side of the head and right side of the rifle. The separate backpack really speeds things up--about twice as fast for me as metal.

The Front Rank Reinforcements are great sculpts, and very different in proportion from the early FR sculpts, which I have a pile of. They are a little bit bigger overall than Perry/Foundry, but definitely ok for the same unit--I save them for grenadiers and the fit is perfect.

I found the Perry plastic flag holder to be a bit fiddly, so I'm using the Foundry version.

I thought the Foundry figures, while beautiful, were fairly small. I'd go for Front Rank.

Another vote for Front Rank.

Here, picture's worth 1000 words (mix of what I described above):

(No cracks about the painting pleeze--these are old grin)

@jeffreyw3- they look fine to me, but then I am old as well!
I no longer have 28mm Russians, but at one time had several hundred. I really liked the Elite cavalry, but the infantry poses looked rather clumsy to me; figures looked like they might fall over in mid charge. Front Rank are OK, but a little too "tubby" for my liking. My favourites were the Foundry range in greatcoats and forage caps, which, I believe were originally sculpted by the Perrys.
As I am not a fan of plastics, although I can see the attraction of lower price, I would probably go for the Perry metals, or, if I could find them secondhand, some of the earlier Foundry figures.

Another vote for Elite Miniatures. My absolute favorite Napoleonic figures alongside of Calpe.

I've been buying Perry plastics and using Foundry figures as alternative command figures, and I'm very happy with them. I'd be equally happy with Front Rank's latest.

Lots of good choices

I use Foundry but as noted there are gaps – Front Rank is hard to beat

Thanks guys for the help on this. Why I love TMP.

All

I don't have any Russians but I cannot speak highly enough of the new Front Rank Reinforcement packs – i've had them for Brits and they are brilliant. About the same size and build as Perry but with the crisp front Rank Detail.

Obviously you can't rule out Perry, but the new front rank figures are a world apart from the older castings

Jeffrey, what the bloody h::: is wrong with the painting, ? It's fine and dandy. BTW, after years and years: I NEVER could get into the Kremlin with the original order of battle, too much open courtyard💀🇷🇺
