I was like "okay, looks good" until the scene where he batted the grenade out of mid-air a split second before it detonated.

Probably a bit Hollywood, but he did try to kick a live hand grenade:

"When a Japanese grenade landed in the hole with him, Doss tried to kick it away, but the explosive blew and peppered his legs and back with 17 white-hot shrapnel wounds."

"His biggest regret? The Bible his wife gave him had fallen out of his pocket when he was blown off his feet by the grenade, and he hadn't recovered it before saving a bunch of lives and walking away from life-threatening injuries."

This shows that he tried kicking the grenade while in a standing position.

I remember reading his story many years ago in a magazine article. Quite a story it was.

A lot of odd-ball sounding things did (and do) happen in battle.
I'm now leery of anything Mel Gibson has his mitts on,but I'll probably see this. Better this than yet another superhero flick.

One question: where's his 'stache?
