Recently a battle was fought near the Czech town of Brandeis one of the last towns before Prague. The Prussians had 15,000 infantry (1500 figures), 5,600 cavalry (560 figures) and 32 heavy guns….all under the command of Lieutenant General Bevern. The Austrians had 18,000 infantry (1800 figures), 3200 cavalry (320 figures) and 24 heavy guns…under the command of Count Lacy. Of note, the Austrian infantry included 6,000 Grenz (600 figures) and this was going to prove the deciding factor in the battle.

The Austrians deployed on the battlefield with both flanks protected by woods and their center being the large town of Brandeis. The Grenz were placed in the woods and town. The rest of the Austrians were held in reserve. The Prussians chose to make a oblique attack on the Austrian right with all their infantry, guns, and half their cavalry. The rest of their cavalry were deployed against the Austrian left as a screen. The Prussians proceeded to assault the Austrian right with great success…albeit with significant losses. Instead of standing and slugging it out to the "end" the Austrian right retreated into the town….denying the Prussians' their chance for victory. The Prussians then tried to redeploy their forces against the reinforced Austrian center and left, but failed to achieve significant gains before night fall. The Prussians then chose to withdraw leaving the Austrians in "possession" of the battlefield and the win…..A somewhat narrow, bloody win, but a win just the same.

I don't think " der Grosse" will be happy with Bevern's performance….who may find himself commanding a company of "invalids" in the Polish "badlands". The Austrian general will probably receive awards, money, and perhaps prettier household staff from Empress M.T. The ending deployment of both armies can be viewed on youtube at

the file is IMG 1318…I suggest that you view it "full screen" as the figures are 6mm Adler! I also have about 40 photos of the battle but no place to post them!
