…for Aleppo. "Al Qaeda's powerful Syrian branch, the Nusra Front, announced on Thursday it was ending its relationship with the global jihadist network founded by Osama bin Laden, to remove a pretext used by world powers to attack Syrians. The announcement came as Russia and President Bashar al-Assad's government declared a "humanitarian operation" in the besieged rebel-held sector of Aleppo, opening "safe corridors" so people can flee Syria's most important opposition stronghold. Washington said that appeared to be an attempt to depopulate the city and make fighters surrender. The opposition called it a euphemism for forced displacement. In the first known video statement ever to show his face, the leader of the Nusra Front, Mohamad al-Golani, announced that the group would re-form under a new name, with "no ties with any foreign party"…" More here link Amicalement Armand |

Yes, that is so the Russias and US won't target them as being part of AQ. And their main target is Assad's forces and allies. But that will only last until there are no more of those. Which is completely unlikely. Didn't UBL's 25 year old son make video saying AQ will go after the US for sending his daddy "to sleep with the fishes" ? No matter what you call'm … radicalized fanatical islamists jihadis, should be considered nothing but targets. Like the zombies on TV shows. |

This is a good PR move, as al Nusra now will be branded more "moderate" and less extreme having severed ties with AQ. Moderate rebel factions supported by the US will join them because they're the group enjoying the most success fighting Assad and Iran's proxy armies. The US will have to choose who she supports even more carefully. |

ISIL severed ties with Al Qaeda long ago. Is ISIL moderate? This is just incompetent rebranding of a violent and radical terrorist group. Rod Robertson. |

Hardly "incompetent rebranding." Here's a better article on this subject. The fact is that this is a brilliant calculated move by Jabhat al Nusra to complicate things for the US in her efforts to support moderate anti-Assad rebels in Syria. link |

28mm Fanatik: A very interesting article you linked to. Also an interesting Foreign Affairs article linked in the one you brought to us. I am not yet convinced of the trap argument but I am willing to wait watch and see what develops. Thanks for posting the link. Cheers. Rod Robertson. |

I've never trusted or believed in liberal-democratic pro-western Syrian rebels. I've never seen much difference between one batch of barbaric Sunni takfiris and another. I think it's crazy for the US to finance and arm any of them. If some maneuver makes it harder for us to do that, I'm in favor, though I'm afraid that certain key players are so bought-and-sold that nothing will shake their commitment. Let the Saudis spend their money on this proxy war if they want to, we can't stop them, but we don't have to join in ourselves. Let's not. I guess we don't agree after all, Rod. |

On that we can agree, Rod. Not long ago, Assad was labeled a "moderate", so I suspect that definition as pretty much lost its meaning, at least in that part of the world, given his use of chemical weapons on his own people, and the dropping of barrel bombs, etc., etc.. Don't really see AQ, former AQ, or Taliban as moderates, despite some peoples' assertions to the contrary. If I have to choose sides, I'll go with the Russians and Assad forces for now, since all the others seem worse, though I'm not unhappy with a long, drawn out war of attrition on all involved in the conflict. |

ISIS, Alqaida, Terrorist responsible for recent attack in Europe; Talibans;Palestinians terrorists,Turkish lead terrs that attacked Israel and killed civilians , Somalian and Nigerian muslim rapers and terrs = simply animals….why such subtilities in choosing which is evil or less bad…in that way i think Putin pragmatism could be an example..at least in war time situation like the one we are leaving…but somebody will argue that we aren't at war |
