Which is your favorite Colonial war during the Victorian period to game on the tabletop?

Col Durnford28 Jul 2016 11:30 a.m. PST

Zulu followed by early war Sudan

Kevin C28 Jul 2016 11:38 a.m. PST

I have a four way tie for #1: Boxer Rebellion, Sudan and North West Frontier (I know that one is actually more than one war -- but people get the idea), and the first and second Sikh wars (again I know it is more than one).

The runners up for me are the Boar War (the last one) and the Anglo Zulu War (the one in the 1870s).

Hafen von Schlockenberg28 Jul 2016 11:45 a.m. PST

This is a candidate for a "top five" poll.

Maori Wars would make my list.
Indian Mutiny.

And how about the Indian Wars in America?

All of the Northwest Frontier wars can be considered one long campaign.

Boxer. Incredible variety of soldiers, sailors, marines, cavalry and native levies for virtually all of the Western Colonial powers (including Japan) plus wide variety of their opponents including Boxers, two very differently uniformed Chinese armies, Tigermen, Kansu Braves et al. A painters delight!

WillieB28 Jul 2016 12:33 p.m. PST

Indian Mutiny is the only colonial 'period' I play, and that is largely due to the fantastic miniatures available now.

I consider Napoleon in Egypt as colonial too but it's definitely not Victorian.

Those Cape War and Maori war figures are very interesting but I know way too little about those wars. Some of the figures end up being drafted in India though grin

15th Hussar28 Jul 2016 12:33 p.m. PST

Sikh Wars

Followed closely by any NWF Campaign from 1838-1947

and

Dahomey 1890-94

Plain's Indian Wars, Zulu, Sudan, Boxer Rebellion and Afghan are all pretty close to a tie for me.

Winston Smith28 Jul 2016 12:42 p.m. PST

Are the Yanks or Italians allowed to play?
Or the Frenchirs and Hun?

Rhysius Cambrensis28 Jul 2016 12:56 p.m. PST

Anglo-Sikh wars. One of the most serious threats ever faced by the British Empire.

Lt Col Pedant28 Jul 2016 12:56 p.m. PST

First Boer/Transvaal War: the actions around Pretoria. Very game-able.

stephen phillip28 Jul 2016 1:00 p.m. PST

Colonial warfare in the Victorian period would include the other superpowers of the time period ie Belgan and Germany in Africa and France in North Africa etc. Any european country that had overseas interest and colonies. Indian plain wars? Not really a colonial conflict although still an interesting historical period of the era
