In your opinion, what is the most iconic war photograph? |
Doms Decals | 28 Jul 2016 5:58 a.m. PST |
The Iwo Jima flag raising, surely…? |

The Iwo Jima flag raising, surely…? I've heard of it but hardly "surely".

IWO Jima Flag Raising. That has been used to promote more products and promotions, war bonds, postage stamps, toys, magazines, newspapers, movies, memorials, I do not think anything else even comes close. |

Personally, I get goose bumps every time I see the Mushroom cloud over Nagasaki. |

Winston, you've nailed my second choice there. Third for me would probably be the "napalm girl" photo from Vietnam – that one's haunting. :-( |

If by iconic you mean what picture(s) pop into my mind when someone says war photograph I would think it would be very contry specific. For the US the Iwo Jima flag rasing, maybe the burning ships in Pearl Harbour or the VJ day kiss or even the battlefield dead of the Civil war. Canada has a picture of a column of soldiers with a wife and child running after one of those in the column. Russia has the soldier raising the flag in Berlin (on the Reichstag?). The mushroom cloud, I think is universially iconic/disturbing. Would be interesting to hear from each country there views. |

As noted for Canada it is "Wait for me, Dad" link The photo is of a 5 year old running to his Dad, who was shipping out with the Duke of Connaught's Own Rifles (British Columbia Regiment) |

As a Brit my first thought is the photo of London burning during the blitz with St Pauls' standing untouched. As mentioned earlier battleship row at Pearl harbour must be high on anyone's list. However most iconic, any of the photos of the mass graves in France, Belgium from WW1… |

When I saw the post title, the first picture that floated into my head was the Suribachi flag raising at Iwo Jima. I'm from the US, born mid 20th century. All the suggestions are great. |

Speaking for myself purely, its one of two:
Because its pretty common on ww2 books. Or this dude who has ended up on at least a few ww2 rulebooks

All good choices. I tend to favor the Marines raising the flag at Iwo Jima. Rosenthal won a Pulitzer Prize for it. They made a life size bronze of it. It has to be the most iconic photo of WWII. Some others: link link link link link |

There's one that was in "The War Years" opening sequence, with what I assume is a Hitler Jugend soldier (looks like he's 12 or 13) surrendering, crying. I and most people who I remind of that sequence find it very disturbing. |

My first thought was that landser with the potato masher over his head--which may be why I mostly gamer periods which don't have war photographs, only paintings. |

I've always thought that these pictures were very striking.
This last one, for me, really showed the enormity of Operation Barbarosa.

Paras at Arnhem advancing through a ruined building. That and the marine yomping in the Falklands with the Union Flag flying from his pack. Those are my favourites but frankly Cappa's SCW photo says it all. No bombast, just the brutal reality. |
