I know de facto orc cavalry in fantasy is mounted on wolves or boars; are there any alternatives to this? In other words, are there orc cavalry miniatures avalible with more normal mounts, such as horses or something not too dissimiler? |

The only thing orcs do with horses is eat them… |

The only proper mount for an Orc is a Big nasty Boar. For Goblins – Wolves |

I remember that Heritage had horse riding orcs – but these were from back in the 70's and based on the orcs from the Ralph Bakshi LOTR film. |

I think it stems from the fact that orcs according to JRRT are not much bigger than hobbits and could not ride a horse if they wanted to.Horses take considerable husbandry to care for( can't see orcs doing that) while wolves can look out for themselves. The bigger Uruk-hi were still smaller then men and all orcs would rather eat a horse then try to ride one. It is only in from modern popular fantasy sources that orcs keep getting bigger and bigger from the overblown muscle freaks from Games Workshop to the dame near ogre sized orcs of World of Warcraft. |

Ahhhh old school orcs . . . miles away from the steroid enhanced monsters that are popular now. Thought this might be relevant . . .

My orc cavalry is Wargames Factory (Warlord if they ever put them back out) Celt Cavalry with Wargames Factory Orc head swaps. They are not quite as big as their infantry companions (scale creep?) but they mix well enough. Also have Celt chariots. |

German fantasy range Das Schwarze Auge – carried by Ral Partha – has Orcs mounted on two kinds of reptile. One a lean, quadruped thing like a cross between a crocodile and a greyhound, the other a biped like a scaly ostrich. Celtos orcs – available from Brigade games – ride smooth-skinned reptilian bipeds with gaping maws. They're pretty good. |
