Hi all I ma looking for a one volume coverage of the Franco-Prussian War or Austro Prussian War. A general overview of the war, with some political and diplomatic history, and if possible something that would entice someone into the period.

Any and all suggestions welcome.

With Respect

The 1870 rules are a good start for the FPW, a good deal of background info

Michael Howard's The Franco-Prussian War is still the gold standard (55 years after publication). Wawro's books are interesting. Quintin Barry's books are good.

The Wars of German Unifocation by Denis Showalter. Great work if you can find a copy. Needs some maps to go with it, but still worth it. Also another vote for Bruce Weigle's books.

Hi all. Thank oyu for the quick replies. We have the Grand Tactical 1866 rules. The Quintin Barry books are great but a bit too dense as a first contact, at least in my opinion. Also a bit poor on the political and diplomatic aspect (excellent, detailed accounts of the military aspect).

The other recommendations are welcome, as well as more.

Did not know about the Showalter book Mollinary, will look into it.

I have Howards's and Warcro's books on the Franco-Prussian War. A Day of Battle is another good one volume book on the subject.

I think the Showalter should tick all your boxes. Written in 2004, a new paperback edition seems to have come out last year, so it is in print. Makes some very useful comparisons with ACW as well. For me, anything written by Showalter is worth it's money. His Railroads and Rifles is magisterial – if you can find a copy!

Good luck in your search.

I would recommend Howard as well.

I found Wawro thorough, insightful and highly readable.

FPW – Howard, no question.

APW – Craig to begin with.

Bruce Weigle's books also a definite.

Howard for the FPW
Wawro for the APW

What do people thing of Russett's Armies of Bismarcks Wars? I have it in kindle form and it seems a good compromise of info and eye candy.

"and if possible something that would entice someone into the period."

For that I strongly advice the memoirs of the war by French Lieutenant Leonce Patry:
