Hey there people,

Wondering what figures you would recommend for Militia types for the VBCW. I have a few Peter Pig figures from their SCW range, but wondering if anyone had any other suggestions.

Cheers.

'Star Trek: Discovery' is name of new Trek series, featuring a new ship, the USS Discovery

The title of the 2017 CBS TV series is revealed at Comic-Con, along with a new spacecraft for the Trek crew.

The future of the Star Trek universe will be full of Discovery…the USS Discovery that is.

The ship was unveiled as part of the Star Trek 50th anniversary panel Saturday at San Diego Comic-Con, where the name of the 2017 CBS TV series was also unveiled: "Star Trek: Discovery."

Showrunner Bryan Fuller said at a later event that the new series will take place in the "prime" timeline, which is the one broken away from by the 2009 "Star Trek" film.

"I feel like what the new series has to do is continue to be progressive, continue to push boundaries," Fuller said to the packed Hall H crowd…."

Hmmm… looks interesting! Now, I just hope they can avoid all the tropes that were so worn out by the Next Generation shows -- monolithic alien cultures, half-human hybrids/androids/ex-Borg drones yearning to be more human, that one alien crewmember who can't be bothered to wear the same uniform as everyone else…

Not a huge fan of the ship design, either, but it might grow on me. If the writing and acting are good, I can forgive them using an old 80's FASA retread.

Lion in the Stars25 Jul 2016 2:20 a.m. PST

Really not a fan of the ship design, it looks like someone welded a Fed saucer to a Klingon rear hull!

But I bet you could get one hell of a good science-heavy story out of the voyages of HMS Beagle (Darwin's ship).

Earl of the North25 Jul 2016 3:48 a.m. PST

It does look like a hybrid Federation/Klingon design.

Dynaman878925 Jul 2016 4:40 a.m. PST

As someone mentioned on the Star Trek web page, it is not a good sign when the initials for the show are STD…

Redmenace25 Jul 2016 5:36 a.m. PST

Considering the influence "Undiscovered Country" is supposed to have on the series The Klingon/Federation hybrid idea is likely true. I wonder if the ship will have any Klingon crew?

And they start by using a disgarded design concept by Ralph McQuarrie from the 1980`s?

Kind of like Abram's reboot….alternate universe means canon doesn't apply and you can go where you want….so…what do they do…..a reverse Khan episode from ST:TOS…..talk about lack of innovation….

kabrank25 Jul 2016 6:40 a.m. PST

I assume if the new series is based on the Prime universe then Cannon will mostly apply.

Do we know yet where discovery will sit on the Prime time line?

One of the background books about the original series published while it was running said the NCC stood for Naval Construction Contract." Assuming contract numbers run sequentially, then wouldn't NCC-10XX series of ships predate the NCC-1701 Enterprise?

That said, that's one ugly ship.

wminsing25 Jul 2016 10:01 a.m. PST

Yep, ship is fairly ugly, I hate to say it. Manages to take the classic Federation design queues and mess them all up.

Drat! I was hoping it would be the old-school USS Discovery instead of the mish-mash with evil red-eye engines..

The G Dog Fezian25 Jul 2016 12:18 p.m. PST

Is it equipped with a HAL 9000 computer?

Norrins25 Jul 2016 12:40 p.m. PST

If you go back and look at the concept art for the Enterprise for The Motion Picture, you can see the inspiration for the Discovery.

That is exactly what I thought -- what is a Klingon design doing on a Federation ship. The trailer was totally lame – a weird looking fed ship coming out of space dock. It tells us absolutely nothing about what the show will be like.

Oh well, I guess we will have to wait for more details.

At least according to Star Fleet Battles, the construction contract numbers run sequentially for classes of ships, but jump around between classes. More like how various historical railroads assign engine numbers to their locomotives than strict serial numbers.

IIRC, the Fed carriers are up in the 21XX range, while the Frigates are in the 5XX range.

MacrossMartin25 Jul 2016 7:32 p.m. PST

In case anyone's wondering, here's where this rather unoriginal design originated:

picture

- An unused concept by Ralph McQuarrie, drawn in the design stages of The Motion Picture in the mid-70's, which proves that there's nothing new in Star Trek.

They wanted to use the USS Akira in Enterprise, now they go back 40 years to find something 'new'.

Just a tad disappointing.

Mobius26 Jul 2016 7:50 a.m. PST

The saucer business on startrek has been a classic of the franchise but is really not an efficient design. It doesn't rotate so no need for an enclosed ferris wheel. The sphere of the original Discovery is more compact. And can be more efficiently armored. But none of ST ships really have any armor which would help if some little enemy drones were to pass through the shields.

That said hopefully the new show will not put a teen girl in the captain's chair. We have Star Wars Mockingjay going on now.

jowady26 Jul 2016 9:16 a.m. PST

I think that they simply took a Norelco Razor as their "inspiration", or maybe a hub cap from a 1970s Buick. I have come to accept that, for people like me, Star Trek ended with "The Undiscovered County".

Howler26 Jul 2016 2:55 p.m. PST

I wonder how they define "progressive?"

Dynaman878926 Jul 2016 5:45 p.m. PST

Don't laugh at the hubcap bit, they freely admit a hubcap was the inspiration for the roof design of the bridge in the ST movies

Zephyr126 Jul 2016 8:23 p.m. PST

That one design looks like they decapitated the bridge off a Star Destroyer hull and stuck a Star Fleet saucer section on the front. Merged "universes" anyone? ;-)

After hearing on when this'll take place maybe this is why they filed a lawsuit against the People who are making the Axanar movie.

Quite frankly I'd rather see the Axanar film much more than this new Star Trek series because I want to see the Four Years War.

Mithmee11 Aug 2016 6:30 p.m. PST

The hero will be a female (who is not the Captain).

Plus since Hollywood needs to do this for everything now days there will be a Gay character.

That is why the Expanse is so much better Sci-fi.

Star trek died after Nemesis.
Let it be dead.

Lion in the Stars12 Aug 2016 9:28 a.m. PST

Good. The Captain has little business going down to planet and getting the entire Command Staff killed in the process.

We have Lieutenants for that kind of thing!

What? I have no position on the gender of either Ship's CO or Protagonist.

Fabe Mrk 212 Aug 2016 10:51 a.m. PST

I agree with Lion,it makes a lot more sense to have a separate 'away team' crew then having the captain and command staff beam down to the planet of the week. It could add some non soap oprea drama and inter crew conflict between the crew.

Fabe Mrk 212 Aug 2016 11:02 a.m. PST

Next thing they'll be teling us the communications officer will be a colored woman

So, we will get to see the first episode on CBS, then we need to pay a monthly fee. Not happy. Also, DS-9 writer welded to Abrams movie staff. So the staff is basically as mismatched as the ship's shape.

Lion in the Stars24 Aug 2016 11:14 a.m. PST

DS9's writer?

Welp, that just killed the whole series.

Redmenace27 Aug 2016 10:05 a.m. PST

The show will also be available on Netflix.

viking31 Aug 2016 4:26 a.m. PST

To be perfectly honest there has been a lot of negative reaction to the New Stat Trek series and a great deal of it has to do with CBS/Paramount action regarding Fan films. In many ways the fan films have been made with better quality and for a lot less money than the studios junk. The Star Trek series will be marketed by CBS as a paid series in North America and available from netflex in the rest of the world. At this point I and others have gotten to the point of not caring about the show or the films. The only way to teach the big executives a lesson is to hit them in the wallet.

I wonder if she's going to bang everything like Kirk did wink
