For light mortars, are they based on small or medium stands?

Small.

medium bases believe, My US Paras certainly are.

The light 50mm to 60mm mortars are based on a small stand.
The 80-81mm mortars are based on a medium stand.

Per the FOW web site

60mm are oddities as they're treated more like "baby mediums" than light mortars. The US sets come with medium bases for them, but British, German, Russian and Japanese 50mm are all small bases.

(Oddly the Italian 45mm Brixia teams are medium bases though. I can only assume that's because they have 3 crew and the small base was too crowded….)

It really depends on how the particular army list classifies them. Most of mine (if not all) go on light bases. But then…

If the light mortar can bombard (Italian 45mm Brixia and US/French/Romanian 60mm) then it goes on a medium base facing the long edge just like 8cm mortars.

If the mortar is direct fire only (Brit 2", German/Soviet/etc 50mm) then it goes on a small base facing the long edge.
