"Black Outlaws and Cowboys of the old west you might be saying with wonderment and head scratching! "Why that's an oxymoron! I've never heard of such a thing!". Yeah, Yeah I know you haven't because they were literally "white washed" (pun intended) out of Old West history. Oh I know you may have heard of the "Buffalo Soldiers" but that was only part of the story. According to historians, about a third of all the cowboys were African Americans. Bet you never saw that in the movies when you were growing up did cha? Neither did I!…" More here link How many movies about them? (smile) Amicalement Armand |

I first encountered this in the TimeLife old west series of books when I was 12 back in 1976. Those books were one of he best Christmas presents ever! Thanks for this, Tango. |

Black and Mexican/Hispanic cowboys played a large but mostly untold role in the American West. I think I've got a small list of books somewhere from when I was doing some research on this topic. If I can find it later, I will post it. |

Bass Reeves was one of the best lawman in the West. There were many others in the old West. |

A quote from true TV show Justified – "Bass Reeves – someone should tell Denzil about him". Instead we get a remake of the Magnificent 7! |

Not-quite-on topic, but kind-of: Similarly, only now is the general populace understanding that about 1/3 of the Union Army during the Civil War were black. |
