Based on Todd's, "American Military Equipage" the State Flag of New Hampshire is described as follows: The field was White Silk fringed with yellow, with cords and tassels of blue and white. On the obverse was the National Arms (which I believe is the spread eagle used on flags of the Regular Army). On the reverse were the Arms of New Hampshire. You might try looking on the state web site to see if a picture or description of the State's Arms of 1861 might be available! Best I can do for you for now, Dave! |

There's some question as to how many regiments left the state with the white color or if any actually did. A pervue of surviving colors in the NH State Collection shows the majority to be blue regimental colors with, or without unit designation. These are almost certainly replacement colors, but some may well be original issue that were retired in favour of replacement colors due to wear and tear. |

According to a quick Google search, the link below would be the State Arms of New Hampshire:
Yes, it's Wikipedia, and the illustration is from 1876, but according to the notes the arms were adopted in 1785. The source quoted by this article says that there was no official state flag before 1909, but says on page 41 that, "The state flags supplied to New Hampshire regiments in the Civil War were of various designs. Many of them bore a representation of the state seal, but some were adorned with the arms of the United States or other emblems." The book is available on Google Books at: link and as a PDF. BWW |

The above picture from BrianW bears some resemblance to the drawing of Colors shown in the fronting page of the "Regimental History of the 5th New Hampshire Volunteers" by Child. Though the detail is difficult to figure! This drawing shows 5 stand of colors, 2 State Issue, and 3 National Flags all of which show battle damage. The one difference discernable in the flag which resembles the above picture is it clearly shows a banner below the arms (probably red in color) upon which the letters "VT" can be seen. This appears below another banner upon which "New Hampshire" is clearly seen. Unfortunately the lithograph print in the book is black and white, and shows the flags draped from their staffs with the staffs upright in a stand. So details of the State flags are difficult to discern. The book does mention a couple of times the Color Guard carrying two flags into battle at different times, and what the fate of those carrying the colors was at the time. Todd mentions the design of the State Colors was done by the then governor of New Hampshire in line with legislation providing the raising and equipping of the State's Militia of 1792 & 1842. |

The following is a brief summary on my notes on New Hampshire flags. A list and short description of the flags in the State House can be found on pages 295 – 303 of The State of New Hampshire Manual for the General Court, 1901. A copy can be found at: link All of the regimental flags in the Manual are described as "State Colors". The pattern of the state colours is best illustrated by the reproduction flag of the 6th New Hampshire. The reverse can be seen here:
The design on the obverse can be seen at the top of this page: 6nhvi-e.com/History.html Recently a collection of photographs taken of the New Hampshire flags in 1866 came up for auction. This provides a look at several flags not listed in the 1901 list. link A careful examination of these images reveals that at least three regiments did not always carry the "State Flag". The 1st NH Infantry was issued a New York Depot regimental color. The 3rd NH Infantry was given a regimental color described as "made of double blue silk, not having any painted work. In white silk script letters is embroidered the following ‘3rd Regiment / N. H. / Volunteers'". In addition to two earlier "State Flags", late in the war the 6th Infantry received what appears to be a Philadelphia Depot regimental colour. |
