GW has put up 5 new Start Collecting sets for pre-order.

link

As you can see the new sets include Stormcast, Bloodbound and Iron Jaws as well as models that had been released prior to the release of AoS.

The Stormcast one is odd in that it gives you only two Retributors, which is not enough for a unit. You need a minimum of three. I wonder if they did that because they give you three in the boxed starter game and these two will round it out to five.

It is a nice set though as it gives you three more prosecutors, which on their own would be $60 USD, as well as another unit of liberators. I definitely need more prosecutors as I only have the 6 I got from buying two of the starter boxed games.

The two more retributors will go into my unit of 5 retributors to make a unit of 7.

The Liberators I'll probably build with the swords and shields as I like the look of them and already have 20 of them with hammers and shields.

It will also be nice to have a Lord Celestant on foot for games where having him on a Dracoth isn't really appropriate, like one upcoming scenario I have in mind involving a plague fleet.

The bloodbound one is an awesome deal. Just buying the Skullcrushers and blood wariors in this by themselves would cost you $112 USD retail and you get them and the Aspiring champion for $85. USD

The Sylvaneth one is surprising, especially on the heels of the success they have had with all the new models in that line. I guess this might be the thing that pushes people off of the fence into getting a new Sylvaneth army. I bought the Treeman last weekend and the Tree-Revenants the weekend before that and already had a unit of Dryads from when they were first released years ago.

So this set is a no-brainer for me. Another Treeman, a branchwych and another unit of Dryads will just about make up a really good starter Sylvaneth force with one more set of Tree-revenants.

I'm not as interested in the Flesh Eaters or the Iron Jawz at the moment but they look like a pretty good deal. With how new the Iron jawz are I'm surprised they made their way into a Start Collecting box too, as they seemed to be pretty well received at the time.

The Flesh Eater one seems to be the only one that you wouldn't get the same, or near the same, bang for your buck out of a second set. All of the other ones would be a good deal buying two, or even three of them for armies. The Flesh Eater one, with the terrogheist or whatever that big zombie-bat-dragon thing is, would limit the utility of a second box.

Good find. Don't play GW games but I'll get a Bloodbound set for sheer OTT menace.

Hi Pictors, I've been reading all the posts about AoS with interest.

I played Wood Elves and Dwarves under 3rd edition, rules were always too complicated for me, couple of years ago I built a Wood Elf army for KoW, much simpler and definitely more of my style of game.

Recently bought Dragon Rampant and am now building a Men of Gondor army for them ( Ring Rampant or Rampant Ring? 😁).

Now onto AoS, not keen on most of their new figures….but the Sylvanath(!)
To me these are the best looking figures that they have produced in years, bought the Generals handbook yesterday and apart from the horrible photos that they've used ( same style as the Warhammer Visions photos which I also can't stand ), I think it's a great book.

I see a Sylvanath army coming and some more Wood Elves ( Aelfs?) coming in the near future.

4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th Ed did nothing for me, AoS has made me start buying from GW again.👍😁

Cheers Andy

These Start Collecting boxes are all great deals, all very much worth checking out.

Hi Andy,

I'm not sure what they are going to do with the Aelfs in the near future. I suspect that the Sylvaneth hybrids are not going to be the only Aelfs around. I really like the idea of Aelfs, especially wood Aelfs, being true wood spirits. I think the new models are fantastic too.

I can, however, see a combined Dark Aelf/High Aelf army that is like the dispossessed dwarf idea, similar to the Fyreslayers, only instead of gathering parts of their god, they are looking to kill Slaanesh.

I'm in the same boat as you, although I only started with 5th edition and stopped after 6th, so I've only missed the last two but I've bought a ton of GW stuff since AoS came out.

Baranovich, they are fantastic deals. I think the Stormcast one saves you about 60 bucks over buying them separately.

Hi, I haven't really bought into all the fluff from GW yet, Wood Elves, Tree spirit, forces of Nature have always appealed to me, so when I say "I can see a lot coming"…I should have added " to my painting table soon"😁

As you seem to have more of a grasp of the background than me, what would be my purchase for background info in the AoS universe?
I see that there is a Battletome and novels for Sylvaneth, maybe I might start there?

Pictors Studio24 Jul 2016 5:32 a.m. PST

Those might be good places to start. Any of the realmgate campaign books are good too. One of the best things about AoS is the scenarios they have published in those. If you buy the campaign books you get background info and scenarios.

If you are only interested in the Sylvaneth then the Battletome is one route, that will give you information about the various troop types and the overall background of the Sylvaneth, which I don't know myself yet as I haven't bought the battletome. I'll probably get it today.

No they did it so that if you wanted to build an unit you would have to buy two of these sets.

That is standard GW practice.

Two of those sets would be a pretty good deal.

But if that were what they were trying to do, why would they have this set available:

Maybe you're wrong about that being standard GW practice.
