Glorantha, easily.

OD&D's implied setting is oddly fascinating.

I'll never not love Warhammer, especially the pre-Black Library fiction and WHFRP.

For me it is Tekumel and Harnworld. I get lost in both places when I visit them in my mind's eye.

Talislanta

Arduin

Tekumel

Weird War Rome(Savage Worlds)

Preferably, the above four interacting with each other.

Wow, lots of Gloranthaphiles. Well, there's Troll World, who doesn't love a world with a gigantic dragon shaped continent named Ralph?

Okay, okay, so best is a bit subjective.

I love the Warhammer World but somehow it's almost too much like our own and feels a bit like cheating.

There's Traveller's Third Imperium, though individual worlds with more than two pages of details are rare. Can you still read A798864-A? The greatest piece of Traveller literature is Survival Margin from the transition from Megatraveller to Traveller the New Era. It's the collected Traveller's news service articles from the entire rebellion period annoted with journal quotes from various luminaries on specific events. Great reading.

Shadow World is neat in its own right though I never could quite get into it. Too over the top for me. Terry Amthor's done lots of work on the setting over the years and the maps (by Pete Fenlon IRRC) are fantastic.

My personal favorite is Yrth from GURPS though that's because it's a very medieval setting but one with a lighter tone than Harn. It's a world that dares to transplant real world religions into a fantasy world and ask which one lizard men would tend towards. Yeah it lacks the depth and breadth of Tekumel or Glorantha but it's fun and easy to run games in and names like Knights Templar and Knights Hosplitar conjure up some strong vibes without having to spend an hour explaining Tsoliani to the players.

Traveller's "Imperium". It's the future, but a 1970's future. Quaintly dated space adventure.

"Greyhawk". The great Free City – the Jewel of the Flaeness. The Daddy of S&S settings. It may have started out as generic and cookie-cutter, but years of development have given it real depth and more potential then even the most ambitious GM could ask for.

The Warhammer first Ed RPG setting, was awesome, as was Harn and Glorantha

Red Redemptionist25 Jul 2016 3:14 a.m. PST

Vanth from Encounter Critical – a bare bones description but just conjures up so many possibilities.

Harn.
I liked a lot of the ideas in feng shui.

If you expand the definition of 'fantasy' to include giant Stompy robots, then nothing comes close to The Sucessor States i.e. the Battletech fluff…

Well, that would be my own, of coarse ;D

Tekumel and Glorantha tied for Gold, Harn gets Silver and the Skyrealms of Jorune gets Bronze. Honourable Mentions go to Fading Suns, Tribe 8 and the Old World (Warhammer). Oh, and an HM for MA, as well!

For standard D&D fantasy, I prefer the Forgotten Realms or even Dragonlance. For non-standard D&D fantasy, I like Carcosa.

For non-D&D fantasy, I prefer the Young Kingdoms (Stormbringer/Elric) or Middle-earth (MERP).

For science fiction, I prefer Babylon 5, although I've never run a game in that setting. The original Star Trek universe is a lot of fun to play as well.

Capt Flash28 Jul 2016 6:31 a.m. PST

Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance. The Shannara realms would be neat as an RPG.

Xintao28 Jul 2016 9:03 a.m. PST

We had great fun in Forgotten Realms back in the day.

Warhammer 1st and 2nd edition had atmosphere baked right into the game. Still one of my top favs.

Forgotten realms is my all time favourite up until the whole crappy spellplague stuff that ushered in 4th edition D&D since then the Realms have been a mess. The early Ed Greenwood stuff was fab.
