I'm just curious. I mean a game where you have a red team/blue team style set up, with one side in control of the scenario and who's forces are hidden form the other players, and then a player team who might represent division of corps level commanders, who are not privy to the information. It would almost be like Dungeons and Dragons as far as the DM/Player relationship goes. It would be so easy to do that I'm tempted to whip some rules up myself… but would anyone play such a set of rules? Every set of war game rules that I can think of are directly oppositional- it's almost part of the definition of war-game rules. Is there anyone out there who'd be interested in trying out something like this? Or is it just too different? |

I don't know of any in this period, but IIRC Pony Wars link and Bodycount link were both designed to be played this way (or at least with a single GM-type figure). I have only played Nuts! but I guess that many of the Two Hour Wargames rules could be played like that too. |

I prefer those types of games. It does require an umpire. Our gaming group had a long running Indian Mutiny campaign where 5-6 of us all played captains of various companies. We received general orders from above, planned, then carried out our mission objectives ourselves. The ump, TMP's Rdraf, controlled the mutineers and kept it interesting for all of us. It was our job to coordinate with each other (or not) to best achieve a win – or our very survival in many cases. Loosely, I just called it a co-op game. You can use any rules you want but it's more fun if it's kind of a skirmish level game. |

Find a copy of The Companions' "Behind Enemy Lines". It's a WWII role play game, needs and umpire who handles all of the other side, and is easily adaptable to other periods. |

Sun Never Sets is not dissimilar from what you're talking about, except it's "troupe style" rpg. |

Any Two Hour Wargames products fits the bill. From man to man skirmish (95th) link to army size games with multiple units. (Morale Napoleon) link Made for solo play, same side play, and head to head play as well.
Don't need a DM and yes, there are LOTS of people that play them. Mostly played solo and same side. |

TK beat me to it. A very good WW II RPG, with tons of little bits of humor in the rules and descriptions. |

Charlie Company – another Vietnam wargame – might be what you're looking for. The GM controls the Viet Cong… |
