Has anyone played this game?

Just ran across it and has good reviews.

What do folks think about it.

Onomarchos22 Jul 2016 11:21 a.m. PST

Fun game, but unless you have a secret source, you will not be able to buy it … it is sold out.

This is a really enjoyable space fleet combat game. I wasn't going to buy it then I played it! Wow! I'm hooked. Luckily I was able to pick up a copy before they sold out.

Yes, I bought it after seeing some reviews on Youtube. It's a very good game and plays a lot like a very trimmed down and well thought out Star Fleet Battles with most of the tactics and 90% less fiddly rules.

The basic set plays like Federation vs. Klingons so I hope they come out with more races.

coopman22 Jul 2016 2:09 p.m. PST

There are a few copies on ebay currently, and not at ridiculous prices yet.

It's wonderful. Can't wait for them to do an expansion with more fleets, but as it is it's a fun game with a fair bit of crunch and strategy. I haven't dug into the campaign game though! The designers notes, printed and on the GMT site, are definitely worth a look – they explain a lot of the decisions made that might seem a bit odd at first glance, and the explanations are good.

If you just want to try it out, you could download… well, everything but the ship stats from the GMT site. BoardGameGeek has high-res scans of the ship counters to complete the set. It's well worth the money, but you don't have to pay up right away if it's scarce.

(buy it anyway)

The reprint is on their 'P500' system . once they get 500 pre orders they print and ship it. right now they're only at 87 preorders.

Onomarchos22 Jul 2016 5:48 p.m. PST

Actually Fabe, the may GMT works, once a game gets over 500 orders, it can go on the production schedule. Don't count on seeing a reprint for a year or two.

Mister Tibbles22 Jul 2016 5:59 p.m. PST

Why they don't do kickstarters eludes me.

Fabe Mrk 222 Jul 2016 7:01 p.m. PST

@Onomarchos

Yeah my explanation was over simplified and inaccurate. yours is better

emckinney22 Jul 2016 7:57 p.m. PST

They don't have to pay Kickstarter's commission and games can gestate on the P500 list much longer. They can also maintain an orderly long-term production schedule. KS is terrible for a company with as many releases as GMT has.

A reprint is tentatively scheduled for 1Q 2017 per their update on July 21: link

fullerena23 Jul 2016 8:57 a.m. PST

It may be OOP, but there are still new copies on eBay UK for reasonable prices, and I've seen it on shelves recently. No need to wait for a reprint! Well, the reprint will probably be cheaper, especially if you preorder. Boxes full of cardboard aren't cheap. Why not buy it now, and still preorder a copy of the reprint?

You do get a nice thick (ridiculously thick) 2'x3' mounted map with a spacey design and 2" hexes, plus a half-map if you need a bit more space. Could use that for plenty of other hex-based spaceship games.

As was mentioned above, you can look at the rulebook as a free download, from GMT's site.

I got really excited to see that it's written with a section to work with Space Empires.

The Space Empires 4X bit is basically a conversion of Space Empires 4X to use the Talon & Terran empires, I think. It's not quite some kind of fully-generalised way to plug Talon in as a tactical engine for it.

Since there's no direct link here, link is the game's page with PDF download links for the various gubbins you need to play, except the actual ship stats. Those are scanned on BoardGameGeek, but to be honest the six counter samples on the page include the heavy cruisers for both factions, and Scenario #1 is a 2v2 CA fight. There's also a learning scenario that starts you off part-way through a game with a 1v1 CA duel.

Thanks! I guess I hadn't read closely enough, though I will.

Ditto, the two part examples of play under ONLINE RESOURCES.
