…—more than a century later.

"Germany will finally apologize for its other genocide. In a landmark admission of historical guilt, chancellor Angela Merkel said her country will formally recognize and apologize for the systematic murder of Namibia's Herero people more than a century ago.

Germany's federal government is in talks with the Namibian government to finalize a common language and policy around the hitherto almost ignored mass killing, the chancellor's office said this week according to AFP. Still, Merkel's government was clear that there would be no reparations, but rather targeted development projects.

"On the question of whether there could be reparations or legal consequences, there are none. The apology does not come with any consequences on how we deal with the history and portray it," Sawsan Chebli, Merkel's spokeswoman, told reporters.

The genocide is widely viewed as the first of the twentieth century, perpetrated from 1904 to 1907, but is rarely recognized. Historians believe that the atrocities perpetrated by the German troops became a precursor for those perpetrated during the Holocaust. ..now .does that mean every nation that was a colonial power start apologizing…there is a long list ,not just Germany..what about tribes in Africa .like the Matabele etc..The parallels only come about because Hermann Goerings father was once gov. of Sudwest Afrika. The two are different.Yes both are brutally bad. ,no excuses.Heck Russia is just one long list of genocides..History is full of them.I'm glad Germany is doing something ,as a German myself.Hopefully this will start some more reconciliations..But usually winners of conflicts don't apologize.

And when will Rome at last apologize for the destruction of Carthage ?

jpattern220 Jul 2016 5:48 a.m. PST

Reparations or not, it's still good to see this kind of admission and apology.

Well nothing wrong with a formal apology. Glad reparations were not made as it would only cheapen the event.

and when will Muscat,Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Mauritania, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Aden other arab sultanates plus Morocco, Algeria, and folowers and ancestors of nefaste figures like Rabah, Tippu Tib, Samory, The Mahdi, apologize for similar activity toward milions of Africans?

And over 1 million Europeans kidnapped and enslaved, as well.

Speaking as an individual of Greek extraction, whose ancestral homeland lay under the boot of Ottoman rule for about six centuries, my guess is probably not.

i think that, i'm referring to Colonial cleavage, the finger must be point toward country that were responsible for those crimes but still had 'nt change their attitude..or toward country which still care about the legacy of the same attitude and accept the doctrine/thinking..and religion associated with it..is not necessary for me to repeat…

That others are indecent is no excuse not to be decent oneself.
