I see Fall in is "Theme: Poland Through the Ages" pretty straight forward Cold Wars is "A Good Day to Die Hard"…I don't know what that is supposed to be… and Historicon is "TBD"…was it decided yet? I like to see a them just as it may give me a new idea even if it is not a themed battle I am running. larry |

"Cold Wars is "A Good Day to Die Hard"…I don't know what that is supposed to be…" Maybe a Sioux attack countered by Marshal John McClane? It will have at least one massive explosion, whether a wagon full of nitro, or a trainload of dynamite. Or perhaps the local "nest of soiled doves" will be held for ransom, inspiring the menfolk of the town to brave action to rescue these poor ladies. "and Historicon is "TBD"…was it decided yet?" Obviously a balanced showdown between the entire Imperial Japanese Fleet and a single determined squadron of Douglas TBD Devastator torpedo bombers. Special winning condiditions: the torpedo bombers must sink _all_ the Japanese ships, else it's a draw. |

Has anyone ever actually gone to a show because of the theme? |

I think the themes are interesting, particularly when they are related to a particular anniversary of historical battles or wars. A theme is never enough to make me start a new project, but often it provides a good reason to put some figures on the table that haven't seen the light of day in a couple of years. I'll be running several Poland 1939 games at Fall In. I like to game the period. I have 10mm figures for larger battles, and I have 20mm figures for skirmish games. So the theme makes it easier for me to decide what to run at a given convention. Buck |

<quote> Has anyone ever actually gone to a show because of the theme? </quote> As a matter of fact, yes. The War with China/Boxer Rebellion theme from Cold Wars '99 got myself and three of my college buddies to hop in a car and spend money at the con rather than beer and wings for the weekend. The themes allow some of the less popular eras a chance to OR they can be an excuse for the excessive glut in Napoleonic/WW2 games. I've only had two themes influence the games The US Cavalry theme for Fall-In! allowed me to create my "Battle of Yellowstone" and the Cold Wars "Forgotten Wars" which allowed me to go crazy over the Samoan Civil Wars. |

I live in Los Angeles but managed to fit all of 2007 Historicon into a family vacation to PA, NJ, NY and New England with my wife and 3 kids, in order to be there for, "The Wars of South Asia: Afghanistan, Burma, India and Pakistan, 1800-2007." A bit of a mouthful as far as themes go, but as a wargamer with a lifelong interest in the Victorian period in general and the Anglo-Afghan wars of the 19th and early 20th Century in particular, an offer I simply could not refuse! In fact the Russian officer whose 1837 arrival at the Kabul court of the Amir of Afghanistan led to the start of the First Afghan War, was either Lithuanian or… Polish, so maybe an 1839-1842 Afghan War game could count as "Theme adjacent." |
