Howdy,
This was a convention game (played with 15mm figures using Volley & Bayonet), so I tried to get troops on the table quickly. As a result, the Confederate attack looked a lot like what was supposedly envisioned by Johnston – converging columns on the Federal position.
DH Hill's division kicked off the attack on Keyes' IV Corps. However, in the game, Hill attempted to swing his right flank south of White Oak Swamp. This resulting in Hill's attack on Casey's division being fragmented. Hill forced Casey from the Union works, but exhausted his division in the process.
Meanwhile, Huger quickly attempted his flank march on the Union left. Huger's presence provided impetus for the Union to fall back and attempt to form a defensive front.
Whiting entered on the Confederate left and deployed to attack Couch's division, the Union right.
Longstreet followed Hill, and pressed the attack in the center.
The Federal's (Heinztleman's Corps) quickly responded to the attack with Kearny's division moving forward to fill the center. He was followed by Hooker, who swung left to confront Huger as he crossed the swamp.
By evening, the end of the battle, Hooker had decimated Huger's isolated division. Couch was exhausted, as was Hill's division. Whiting carried the Union works, as Casey fell back to maintain the line. Longstreet reorganized from his initial push and was prepared to renew the attack. But with the Union line reinforced, Johnston halted the attack. The bridges across the Chickahominy washed out, and Sumner's Corps never reached the battlefield.
A Union victory. Photos will follow.
Ponder on,
JAS
