The HAWKs ran a bunch of games specifically for kids at Historicon 2016 last weekend. One game was our Armies for Kids project for kids 10 and under. After the game is over, the kids go home with armies, rules, etc. so that they can plan with their buddies. See bucksurdu.com/blog/?p=5408

I was busy handing out the goodies after the game. If any of you parents have pictures of the Monty Haul phase of the event, please send them to me. In particular, I'd like a copy of the group shot at the end with the kids holding all their boxes full of toys.

Great that HAWKS do this, and I (and others) have been
delighted to help with donations in the past.

Don't recall seeing a solicitation for this year,
and will be happy to contribute in future if y'all
need contributions of figures.

Ed-
Thank you! You've always been one of our most generous supporters. The bulk of the figures for this year's project came from a big box of 20mm plastics you sent me a few years ago.

We haven't decided on next years project yet, but if we need anything we'll let you know.

Putting on these games each year is a lot of work, but it is also fun. The kids have a good time in a game that is just for them, no adults. And you should see the looks on their faces when we tell them they get to take armies, terrain, rules, dice, etc. home with them to game with their buddies! Sometimes I wonder if we are preaching to the converted, but we are trying to do SOMETHING about the graying of the hobby beyond merely wringing our hands.

Thanks, Ed, for your contributions over the years. As Chris said, we'll have a meeting soon to plan this year's project and will let folks know if we need anything. We still have a good backlog of figures that have been donated in the past. We try to start with something we already have and then grow it.

This year we may have two Armies for Kids projects. Someone handed us a couple hundred of those cardboard collectable pirate ships. So we are going to develop a kid-friendly naval game at the same time we do a land game. More to follow.

Well Done Buck.
Please let everyone know the future plans as I have tons of painted toys I could weed to help.

Another great job by the HAWKS.

Well done.

The looks on those kids' faces makes the effort all worthwhile!

One of the things that annoys me is the grumpy old farts who would rather ignore kids or be rude to them rather than get them excited about the hobby. Thanks for being a great ambassador. Well done.

Here is a blog entry from one of the fathers who watched the game and helped out. Apparently his son enjoyed the game quite a bit.

79th PA:

Watch the Historicon PEL next year. We'll be doing it again. No matter what you are playing, it is really fun to see the last ten minutes of the even and look at the expressions on the kids' faces.
