I agree with those who say the facts get in the way. There may have been some generic sci-fi figures on the market, but the following games had rules and dedicated miniatures: Starguard (1977) – dedicated miniatures produced by MacEwan. Space Marines (1977) – there were miniatures representing the specific races, but I am not sure when they were produced. Strike Team Alpha (1978) – Ral Partha produced the miniatures for this game. Galacta (1980) – rules and dedicated miniatures produced by Heritage. Laserburn (1980) – 15mm miniatures, and the 25mm miniatures produced by pre-GW Citadel matched the artwork in Laserburn. Star Rovers (1981) – rules and dedicated miniatures produced by Archive. WH40K Rogue Trader was published in 1987. In regard to this question: "… why would you want to play in any other setting?" Just counting my painted Space Marines, I have about 200 who have never been in a WH40K game. |

What?? I have been glitched! I have never painted a Space Marine…..Catachans yes….. Let's try again; Finally got this done and I had better only post on the Gallery, or slapped wrists! The carriage is scratch-built from brass and plastic sheet/rod/strip to 15/18mm scale. Wheels are again, as with Julian's Berline, from Langley models; link but the emphasis was more on the figures this time. AB and Eureka conversions, head swaps etc. Many thanks for the help with the postilions' livery. I went with yellow lace and what are meant to be black Romanov eagles. The eagle on the coach was going to be the real challenge but done in minutes and at first attempt. The middle picture is most colour accurate. The rest are too blue. Must paint the drag ropes and the white belt over the riders' scabbards! Then I just have to get it to OZ and past those suspicious customs types! (and there are two spare lamps to light up Boney's right rear too)

The carriage is a beautiful piece of work, and that background is pretty impressive as well. |

Hey Deadhead , where did you get the background picture from – It looks like it is the Hermitage in ST Petersburg. Awesome work :) |
deadhead | 19 Jul 2016 2:33 a.m. PST |
Almost…it is the Catherine Palace just outside St P's at Pushkin. Better known as the Summer Palace and personally I prefer it to the Winter Palace/Hermitage. Funnily it looks its best in mid Winter in the snow. Glad you like the background. Took longer than the coach to construct…and you have all guessed, it is not my construction alas. Thanks for the feedback all |

To be honest, much easier than you might think. The Berline was more challenging…indeed anything in 15 mm scale is murder! I might work on producing some plans, to post here. It is all just a matter of cutting out squares and rectangles in sheet plastic, chopping up Slater's strip and rod in plastic and cutting some brass strip (now that is tricky, as no one now does really narrow strip and mine is all exhausted) Plastic sheet can be curved, if you know the trick…. Not sure how much use these are, though, to wargamers. Carriages were not for battlefields…I do gather that "command units" are of interest, but not quite sure if these would count. But I gather Massena had very similar landau with four white horses……as he was injured and unable to ridewas it Wagram? Hmmmm……Then there is Joseph's carriage at Vittoria….already did the Malmaison carriage from Genappe (but that was 28mm). What about a Coronation coach….or the wedding coach for ML of Austria? I have today posted the above to Julian in OZ. I knew I had not bothered to paint the drag ropes. OK the wheels need the crimson tidying up. The attendants should be holding onto brass rails…they are still black. But the worst. I forgot the leather straps. The C springs are not attached to the cab!!!! It is just floating in the air……four black straps at each corner to suspend the cab needed. I wonder if I can get our postal service onto this? Surely it can get back to me……… |

Deadhead – Happy to say the Landau has arrived :) . Busily basing it and sorting out some additional staff and suitable generals to escort it :) Hmmmm Guard Cossacks or Guard Hussars hmmmmmm so many decisions. |
deadhead | 08 Aug 2016 7:24 a.m. PST |
Strictly, if it was in St P's it would be neither. Ural Cossacks provided his personal escort I believe, but they are a dull dark blue (and need beards). See the two leading the escort in 28mm (Front Rank figures and Westfalia Tsar and landau) The Guard Cossacks in red look great, but it will all depend how they have been cast. If they are too heroically posed, no use as escort. I'd use the hussars if you already have them. Again, I gather it suffered in transit and if I can advise on repair……let me know. The Tsar figure does not have a moustache in 15mm, even if it looks like it in every photo. You might yet want to swap the head. Believe me it will come off easily enough!

Ural Cossacks are do-able – have a multitude of Cossacks unpainted from AB ( Some complete with beards) . The picture above looks magnificient – can picture the Tsar inspecting long lines of his troops reclining back in his carriage. |

That is some unit. The Tsar's landau looks like it has found its home. Delighted! I can see it did suffer in transit, but you sure have repaired it well. Let me guess. The Tsar's arm separated off? One of the attendants came off the step? That rail is photoetched brass intended for USS Arizona….it is delicate! It clearly did bend a bit……..but it made it!
Now when I get to finish the Britschka with both Fred W II and Alex I, you will have to line up both your Prussians and Russkis for inspection! Snag is I now have to do a Prussian eagle (actually quite controversial for the Napoleonic Era) Indulge me with at least one more photo that Julian sent me that shows how good is his escort for the carriage…..
