I am looking for a good fun rule set for some 1:600th Roman and Carthaginian galleys i have just started working on.

I have looked at a few sets of free rules like Corvus ver2 and Oceanus Strategoi both look ok but what else is there.

Many Thanks
Nick

The latest is probably Poseidon's Warriors from Osprey.

For large actions – multiple squadrons per side, with squadrons of 5, 3 or single large ships. Might be a bit of a stretch in 1/300. And they are definitely at the quick and fun end of the spectrum rather than the complex.

Corvus are decent, more complex than PW. There is also Naumachiae from Langton's which IIRC is more complex again

The version of Corvus published by the Society of Ancients is a somewhat more developed version of Corvus 2. Personally I think it plays better and gives a more challenging game but the differences are not very great.

I found Naumachiae to be far too complex, mostly without any real gains in play or enjoyment.

PW must be pretty simple if it is simpler than Corvus.

I heartily recommend Nic Wright's Galleys and Galleons Rules, (without the galleons,)with a few house rules.

Have just played a game this afternoon with 47 ships and two players. Had great fun with an historical result, (by which I mean for an almost equal points, fictional set up no a-historical howlers reared their ugly heads,)in five hours including set up, lunch and beers.

I'll be doing a write up soon.
Cheers,
Bertie

I quite like Corvus (SoA vers.) – 'pinch of salt' but plays nicely and entertains the players …

Tony Bath Galley rules which can be found in Naval Wargaming by Don Featherstone. link

I have Corvus (SOA version with the colour card galleys), Naumachiae and PW but now I also have G&G so thanks for that :)

Corvus I find simple enough, just a tad fiddly with the turning circles an' all. Naumachiae is a bit too intense for my liking but I did discover its available for free download these days. PW is very simplistic – good for really big games but you lose a lot of feel.

Never tried the Song of… stable of rules, keep reading good things so I'll see how G&G go, especially as I managed to purchase Flashing Steel as well. . .

If you're looking for rules for big battles, find a copy of the old AH Trireme game.

I quite like Navarchus available on lulu.com.

It was designed for 1/300 scale, but you could easily scale downwards.

Playable, and I found the author quite reachable via email for questions and pointers which always helps when you are trying to figure-out new rules.
