Evidently being a non-recurring gold-shirt character in an away team is more dangerous than being a Red Shirt: YouTube link |

I just don't want to be the only 'red shirt' extra on the mission…….. |

But he needs to count the main characters into those numbers. Then it would prove that wearing Red is a good way to end up dead. |

Red-shirts have always optimistically thought "Hopefully the next dangerous alien species that we meet is colorblind…" |

I had a substitute coach who was an occasional weapons man or navigator. On the bridge where sulu or chekov usually posts. I think he joked one time that since he wasn't a red shirt he might get a recurring role. But I don't remember him being in more than a couple episodes. |

But he needs to count the main characters into those numbers. Then it would prove that wearing Red is a good way to end up dead. He left out the "immortal" main characters because it would skew the data since they were NEVER in danger of dying. So what you are saying is the data needs to be fudged in order to produce the results you are looking for. |

Teh internets have gotten lazy in just saying "Red Shirts" Those in engineering/social-sciences are not in as much danger as security. You don't want to be the Non-recurring Security Redshirt who suddenly gets called to the away party. |

Actually, after watching the YouTube video the one thing that impressed me was the size of the armed escort Kirk & Co. often took with them. Sometimes six or eight armed and ready security men. Compare this with the Next Generation landing parties where security basically consists of Yar or Worf and maybe one other person. We often think of Kirk as reckless and Picard as sane and cautious. And yet Kirk at least brings along a reasonable escort. |
