Nice, but a lot more guys in mail shirts would have been a good thing. Hopefully there will be mounted figures in due course? |

Armour was apparently very rare amongst the Picts, UFB: restricted to chieftains only. A couple of these figures are wearing trews; clothing more commonly associated with the Irish/Scots. Anyway, it's certainly a useful means – along with shields and paint-schemes (e.g. only saffron-yellow shirts, and blue/black tattoos, for Picts) – of differentiating the two types of 'hairies' on the tabletop. |

Not at all clear that that was the case; there's very, very little evidence either way. however if Vikings could manage mail shirts it's s good bet that Picts could too. Naturally only more prosperous men could fork out for mail, but they would be the ones with significant military obligations anyway. There are indications that tenure linked to service (like Drengage) was not uncommon. In due course Drengage was converted to knight service. Professor Duncan and Alex Woolf are probably your best bet for general info. h Neither are especially interested in military matters, but a bit of understanding about the nature of the society will usually give you some useful insight into the military aspects. |

I'm not aware of a single representation of Picts in mail, nor of a single find of Pictish mail. Extensive exposure to Viking incursions will I suppose have resulted in some bits of kit changing hands, but I have to say that it's entirely conjecture. After all, the Picts as a whole are still a bit of a mystery. The figures look lovely, but we all have to admit that Pictish sculpted stones are our only source. |

Truly the Pics are a mystery, but we should not assume that they were incapable of acquiring the same armour as their contemporaries. |
