The National Park Service has 4 visitor centers in Fredericksburg which are part of Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park, all free unless you see the movie which is a nominal charge. There's the museum near downtown next to the National Cemetery, Chancellorsville west on Rt 3, Chatham Manor across the river downtown, and Jackson Shrine about 20 minutes south of town. They have driving tours of the different battles that you can buy or rent. |

Manassas is only @ 45 minutes away. Plus a lot of smaller skirmish locations. Monticellp and James Madison's house isn't that far. Also, Confederate Museum in Richmond, and those battlefields (Cold Harbor.) Wilderness, etc. |

When attending HCon we try to allow an extra day to take in Historic Sites. We did the Jefferson Davis White House in Richmond on Wednesday, pretty cool. Past cons we've done Fredricksburg, Spotsylvania and Chancellorsville Battlefields. All good. The Marine Corp Museum off 95 is a must see. Driving down from NYC/NJ area, we have hit Gettysburg, Antietam, and Manassas. Another good one, but a bit farther south is Pamplin Park south of Petersburg. They have a restored Plantation, Museum, and surviving Breastworks from the Petersburg defenses. Also great BBQ nearby is Kings BBQ in Petersburg. Cheers, Xin |
