Which rulesets were so good that you rebased your armies for them?

Jcfrog14 Jul 2016 10:45 a.m. PST

Most of the tim no need. Adapt the rules to your bases, to history even sometimes.

Dynaman878914 Jul 2016 10:46 a.m. PST

I based mine so that they do not need rebasing.

Joes Shop Supporting Member of TMP14 Jul 2016 10:58 a.m. PST

I've never rebased.

jeffreyw314 Jul 2016 11:07 a.m. PST

Have not yet been written…

f u u f n f14 Jul 2016 11:13 a.m. PST

I have rebased "spare" Mighty Army stands to Hordes of the Things. Taken the figures off their 2"x1" bases for HoTT bases instead.

Rebased a selection of my Punic Wars 1/72 scale to NT's Introduction to Wargaming.
Same with some 1/72 scale ACW.

Also looking to rebase some Ancient Romans to One Hour Wargames… once I get around to picking up someone for them to fight.

Thought about rebasing my Warhammer Fantasy Battle to Age of Sigmar (square to round), but haven't decided yet if I want to go through with it or not.

VVV reply14 Jul 2016 11:20 a.m. PST

Hopefully no rules force you to base in a certain away.

Winston Smith14 Jul 2016 11:20 a.m. PST

It wasn't the rules that made me rebase. It was the fact that ALL "modern" figures will not fit on the original basing for 1776.
Now my basing is as generic as I can make it. And if some odd new AWI rules that all the Cool Kids love is impossible to play with my basing…

This is where the procrastinators win!

BelgianRay14 Jul 2016 11:56 a.m. PST

I did the same as Dynaman8789

foxweasel14 Jul 2016 12:12 p.m. PST

No such thing.

Rebasing an army: timely, messy, expensive, PITA
Using the rules anyway: free, neat, speedy

No contest…

Mute Bystander14 Jul 2016 12:35 p.m. PST

Never, ever, rebase your figures.

Personal logo Doctor X Supporting Member of TMP14 Jul 2016 1:11 p.m. PST

I rebased once about 30 years ago.
Never again.

Zippee14 Jul 2016 1:20 p.m. PST

Impetus – rebased all my WRG/DBM stuff, never looked back.

Best decision I made

Sure it was a significant project and I touched up, repaired and added extras along the way.

Haven't found the need for anything else – oh hang on yeah rebased many of my LotR GW figures from the horrible slotta base to mdf circles. Much nicer – but that's purely an aesthetic thing not for rules. And I haven't finished :)

More than I'd like to admit. But--not counting replacing really horrible bases--I've rebased for types of rules rather than specific rules, and to consolidate into larger armies with more tactical options. What I wound up with was:

--All pre-modern microscale on a sort of 2/3 scale Volley Bayonet
--All modern (WWII) microscale on 1" stands
--All pre-1700 or fantasy 15mm on 60mm bases like "heroic scale" DBA
--All Horse & Musket 15mm on a mixed Koenig Krieg/NB basing
--All Modern (WWII) 15mm on (more or less) FOW basing
--All 28mm mounted individually--round if they skirmish, square for massed formations.

The idea is that massed warfare is waged in 15mm--or microscale when there are table restraints--and 28mm for skirmishes and the smaller sort of massed battle in which it matters that some sniper picked off the Colonel. Nothing too small to handle, and if the rules can't work with the basing, the rules don't come home.

John Armatys14 Jul 2016 1:51 p.m. PST

What Extra Crispy says.

I've occasionally used "sabots" where larger bases are required, and acquired some MDF bases for that purpose with Neil Thomas's Simplicity Practice in mind.

Lucius14 Jul 2016 4:54 p.m. PST

I based my Crusaders on WRG frontages, and they sat unused for ten years. They just didn't look right.

I re-based them on square 50 X 50 mm bases last month for Soldiers of God, and I'm thrilled. It just looks more "Crusadery".

evilgong14 Jul 2016 7:14 p.m. PST

Not since 1987

Timotheous14 Jul 2016 7:52 p.m. PST

Re based some 15mm napoleonics from Napoleon's Battles to Lasalle. Also re-based some SYW Brits from DBA basing (Humberside Extension) to Might and Reason. In both cases, our group had left the old rules for the new and shiny.

Never rebase my 28s again ! I base on 3/4 inch steel bases. Cut and paint 60mil magnetic bases for the rules. Don't have those beautifully landscaped bases but tough !

(Phil Dutre)15 Jul 2016 12:03 a.m. PST

Never rebase!

Rules come and go, but your miniatures will be with you forever. It's the miniatures that are at the core of my wargaming, not the rules. So the rules are adapted to the miniatures, not the other way around.

10 or 20 years from now, chances are I will play games with miniatures of which a large part are already in my collection today. But I will probably have iterated through several rulesets.

Ottoathome15 Jul 2016 3:55 a.m. PST

Phil is correct.

Never rebase. Adapt the rules. It's much easier to adapt rules than to rebase collectsions, especially if you have over 100 figures in an army.

Besides most rules today have a shelf life of about six weeks, and are dead in 12. They are pure crap.

I've rebased my collections several times, but the last was twenty five years ago when I finally got tired of other peoples rules and developed my own. Since then, no rebasing. Damages the figures too much and requires painful re-organization etc. which means a few figures left over from an old regiment or you have to paint more to make up the new regiment.

bobm195915 Jul 2016 4:54 a.m. PST

I re-based all my 15mm Ancients and 25mm Dark Ages for Impetus from WRG because the bases look better and protect the figures. Now use them with To The Strongest as well as Impetus and don't intend to ever re-base them again.

I enjoyed doing it!

So I then re-based all my ACW 15mm to achieve the same level of protection. I upped from 1" squares to 30mm squares.

(The protection comes from not having any part of any figure overhanging the base)

I've rebased some units but not for any rules. Just to update them to ny new basing style.

The Nigerian Lead Minister15 Jul 2016 10:06 a.m. PST

None. Rebasing is never an option.

Personal logo Yellow Admiral Supporting Member of TMP15 Jul 2016 10:23 a.m. PST

I rebase purchases of painted miniatures to whatever standard I settled on for the existing collection(s) they are supplementing, but not necessarily for rules.

I have also launched a couple rebasing projects because the existing bases looked awful or were too hard to use.

My only rebasing this year has been when I bought some minis and re-based them so they fit with my other minis for that period

Have only re-based for rules once

DesertScrb15 Jul 2016 11:11 a.m. PST

I rebased for Hordes of the Things, but that was to get individually based minis from Warhammer, 40K, DDM, and Heroclix onto the multi-figured stands. I don't plan on rebasing my HotT armies for Kings of War, since I can just use them as is.

Timmo uk15 Jul 2016 4:18 p.m. PST

I've done way too much rebasing and to cap it all as far as my ECW collection goes it was pointless. I've gone back to where I started out although this last time around it's all on steel.

Napoleonic French infantry were rebased for LFS and it was definitely worth it.

Winston Smith16 Jul 2016 7:27 a.m. PST

I'm always willing to try a new AWI system.
I have two basing systems in use now.

The first involves 2" x 1" stands. Three infantry or one cavalry figure.

The second has infantry based on 3/4" steel washers. I also gave a box of 2" x 1" magnetic stands to allow unique units of system 2 to fight with system 1.

If there are any rules that absolutely REQUIRE a different system, and for which my troops are incompatible, then I don't even give them a second glance. They're probably rubbish anyway. grin

Mooseworks817 Jul 2016 9:39 a.m. PST

One Hour Wargames with a strong influence from Bob Cordery. I broke several figures rebasing as I had used super-glue to base them initially. Now I only base them with hobby glue.

raylev317 Jul 2016 12:57 p.m. PST

It's been over 20 years since I rebased anything. Ain't no war game that's worth all that trouble.

Weasel19 Jul 2016 1:59 p.m. PST

I usually try to just fit existing basing standards when I write.

If a game really requires specific basing I don't have and I really want to play, I'd sooner buy some new troops.
