I am looking for something like the Skirmish Campaigns series for skirmish scenarios for Belgium in 1914. Does anything like this currently exist in print form, or are there any sites that that address skirmish level scenarios for Belgium? Thanks!!! |

Well the 1914 SkirmishCampaigns Rommel book covers this area. Rommel's route to Verdun. skirmishcampaigns.com |

The opponents in that Rommel Skirmish Campaigns are all French, not Belgian (I own that one and was hoping there was something like it for the Belgian front). Thanks! |

Do you have one of those dog-drawn machine guns? |

Not yet…waiting to see if I can find some sources for skirmish scenarios before taking the plunge with these little gems:

Oh, yes, I see; sorry. There is a 1940 version but I daresay that won't be particularly helpful. |

I don't think there is any scenario book for 1914 Belgium. There are some nice battles to play out though. For inspiration, The Last Great Cavalry Charge by Joe Robinson might be interesting. I am not aware of any other 1914 books in English on the subject. There is a lot more in dutch, if you can read it. BTW, the Van Dyck models are truly magnificent, having seen them myself. I've started working on my own based on the BEF in Belguim, 1914….long way off, however, I am trying to play test another one based on early war scenarios. |

Joe's book is very good, though it is not about a skirmish action as such. Given that WW1 forces were significantly more compressed in space than WW2 and later, it is hard to model even a small piece of the Battle of the Silver Helmets. There are some English language texts that contain useable information. Bloem's book has examples of skirmishes in the lead up to the Battle of Mons, as his company crossed the Belgian countryside and as it became the preliminary advance towards British lines of defence on the Condé Canal. Several of the British regimental histories, both cavalry and infantry, have examples of skirmishes that would easily translate to their Belgian counterparts. The examples that I have for Belgian forces are in French. To be honest, they are not a lot different from other examples that appear in the rest of the literature. Basically you either have meeting encounters of recon elements or you have a rearguard that is then scouted and attacked by a recon element. Cavalry and cyclists were usually in the advance guards but, as Bloem's account describes, foot infantry were also directly involved. Robert |
