I am looking for a miniature war-game ruleset for WWI grand tactical or operational level rules for 1914 where a single unit or stand represents a division. I am looking to put together a game that represents the entire front or large portion of the front for the Western and Eastern theaters in 1914 with 6mm figures. Anyone have any ideas they would care to share? |

A stand per division is quite extreme in a figures game, although I have designed such games myself. As KT says, you could bump some of the larger scale sets like BBB or GWSH up a level (so the units are divisions not brigades) but you'll still have far too much kit to deploy an entire front, and I'm not sure you'd have an Army level WW1 game either. |

The largest-scale WWI-type battles we have tried with BBB have used a scale of 3,000 men per 1" base, 3-6 bases per division-sized unit. In particular, we have fought Le Cateau (using some experimental rule modifications), and more recently Kirkkilise, 1912 (1st Balkan War). This latter one was ~200,000 men a side on a 60km front, on a 6'x4' table, and was a Monday night game set up and done and packed away in under 4 hours. See TMP thread here: TMP link But I'd have thought there must be something more WWI-specific out there. Do you have a particular front or operation in mind? What timescale are you looking at? Do you just want to fight one discrete attack on a single day, or a larger operation over a few days, or several weeks' action? Or do you want brutally simple rules so you can do the whole of WWI as a campaign? Do you want logistics to feature, counting trainloads of artillery ammo? For genuinely large battles I use Richard Brooks 'OP14', but even then the sub-units are brigades while the manouvre units are Corps. But you can do some pretty big battles (like Tannenburg). The only full front game I've played is Phil Sabins '1914' which covers the entire western front from Mons to the miracle of the Marne. The Units are armies, but it uses deterministic combat and double-blind play so works better with a map and counters than toys. He ran it at the 2014 Connexions conference.
