An enjoyable read of interesting game. I read somewhere that the WW1 big battles weren't that good to be gamed but you certainly dispute that point here. |

Lee that is the complete opposite of my experience. I get my best enjoyment of larger scale to really give a sense of WWI battles. Great post! Inspirational! Shawn |

Thanks all, and yes I agree with Shawn. A few years ago the big battles of ww1 were somewhere near the bottom of my list of stuff I'd like to do. However a combination of reading a few more recent histories, the release of the excellent GWSH2 rules and the release of Baccus's 6mm ww1 range piqued my interest. I think it is only on the tabletop that you can get anywhere close to appreciating the dilemmas and tactical difficulties faced by the general's at the time, and there is more subtlety and variation to those tactics than you may think. One of GWSH2's strengths is it gradually introduces the tactical innovations as they occur and simulates them well. It has certainly given me a greater respect for some of the Generals of the time, some of them may have been donkeys but I suspect most were trying to do their best in the worst of situations. |
