Which ruleset looks terrible on the shelf, but is fantastic to play? |

Great War Spearhead (the new edition) is great, but the cover looks like it was designed on Microsoft publisher in the early 90s. Oh, and the latest Command Decision too. Why on earth release a ruleset with a bad photo of average painted minis instead of say, a bit of period artwork or even a licence-free photograph of troops etc? This will be interesting – it's a particular bugbear of mine. |

Fireball Forward. Really old school with no pictures of minis and all black and white with excellent rules (nice illustrations though, just all line art). I left all the old mimeographed rules from days gone by out of the running or they would be a few of those like Command Decision first edition – that did come in a box so it actually looks good on the shelf. |

I used to think that WRG Ancients were pretty good rules, various editions. They were printed about as bare bones as you could get. What really slapped on the UGLY were the various cut and paste (literally) amendments and penciled in notations. I may bitch about the rules now, but back then I had a good time with them. |

With the caveat that my stuff looks pretty guerilla, so I really shouldn't talk, I'll say that DBA is easily the most off-putting game I've ever bought. The game is fun and has a lot of brilliance inside it, but between near-impenetrable run-on sentences, microscopic print and an utter aversion to using the return key on the typewriter…yeah, not easy going. As far as art goes.. Mega-traveller?

I have a copy of 2nd edition Pieces of Eight from Peter Pig. An outline skketch of a skull&crossbones on the cover sheet, type written on stapled together goldenrod loose sheets, no art work. But a fun game to actually play. |

and original Traveller ugly plain black and maroon cover I couldn't disagree more: stylishly minamalistic. A design classic. The rules were pretty good too. John T |

There was a really unfortunate All Things Zombie cover, IIRC. |

That's the one, Ed! I'm afraid that cover was a beast, but happily we know not to judge a book that way. ;) |
