Hello, I need to research a tactical and strategic aspect of a WWI battle. I am looking for a small encounter or some aspect of a larger affair. Thank you |

The battle of Mons is very well documented and is easily considered as part of the larger battle of the frontiers. For all the British hype it was still only a small affair on the scale of the whole action taking place right along the length of the frontier. Lots of commonly held myths that you might debunk and plenty of 1st hand material to draw on. |

If you are new to WW1, I'd go for one of the 1914 battles as they don't rely on understanding the previous years of developments first. Mons as suggested is very well documented, the battles of the Frontiers are great too. For an exotic flair, try Tannenberg or the Austrian invasion of Russia. |

I'd second Hamel as a single-day, tactical action with significant consequences for the conduct of future operations. One pol-mil strategic aspect was the decision that US troops were not to be employed as tactical sub-units in other Allied armies, despite their success at Hamel. Considered Fromelles for a minute as it's also a 24 hr affair, but on reflection it has no military strategic aspect (or any other value). |

How about the Hohenzollern Redoubt? |
