What would you use for these? Just the Generic Western Europeans from Essex or something else?

GurKhan11 Jul 2016 1:13 a.m. PST

Not much evidence on what they looked like – Druzhina has some discussion, IIRC – but possibly a more Late Roman look than generic EuroBarb.

A Late Roman look for 8th century Spanish Visigoths?

GurKhan11 Jul 2016 9:01 a.m. PST

They've become increasingly absorbed into the native Hispano-Roman population, abandoned the Arian church in the 7th century, have had the Byzantines as neighbours for decades – so, yes, somewhat: Romano-Byzantine influenced, anyway.

Sources – link if you believe the Ashburnham Pentateuch might be Spanish; link if you don't – oval shields, knee-length tunics, those of the "dignitaries" look to have vertcial clavi.

Oh, and link – a bit less Roman, perhaps, but it's hard to tell. Is that mail or lamellar he's wearing?

Hmm. I don't think any figure maker produces anything like this, do they?

GurKhan12 Jul 2016 1:28 a.m. PST

Like which option? And what scale? I assume 15mm from the "generic Essex dark age" reference?

Minifigs do Visigoth spearman and archer in the "Ashburnham Pentateuch" tall hat in both 15mm and 25mm – link and link – photos of the 25 versions (the archer linked from DA7 for some reason).

Donnington have a range of Visigoths in 15mm which are I think aimed at the 6th-7th centuries – link

Thanks--yeah meant 15mm. The Donnington look OK so I ordered a sample pack. Does someone own the Minifigs that could give me a quick review of them?

idontbelieveit12 Jul 2016 3:51 p.m. PST

Did they really wear hats like that?

GurKhan13 Jul 2016 1:30 a.m. PST

link and link

Whether it's actually Spanish Visigothic or not is anyone's guess, but _someone_ wore hats like that.
