"During and just prior to World War II the Japanese Navy used Magdalena Bay (Bahía Magdalena), 600 miles south of San Diego on the Baja penisula in Mexico, as a hiding place for submarines. It is reported that Max Miller, the author of Land Where Time Stands Still, had personally observed a Japanese submarine from a high spot above the bay himself after a short side trip to Puetro San Carlos, possibly during his 1941 journey through Baja California --- although he does not make reference to such a sighting by his own eyes in his book. The closest he comes is what he was told while in La Paz … More here link Amicalement Armand |

Pure Indiana Jones story awaiting to be told there. One of those big Jap subs with a hanger, the lost idol of Tepache, a old one eyed sharman, Japanese fanatics, the risen dead warriors of Tzpapalotl. "What do those Japs want with the idol Indi?" Can't wait. |

Very old and very unsubstantiated old wives' tale. To date, no one (with even minimal historical credentials) has confirmed any shred of this tall tale. And the site quoted is run by a known wack job. |

I know there were some plans to attack the Panama canal with some of their sub-launched aircraft, back in the day, so it isn't too implausible, I suspect. |

Except the attack was planned for the eastern side. That has been confirmed. As for a base in Baja: Nothing has been found to confirm any such claim. |

The plot of Humphrey Bogart's movie Across the Pacific involves an attempt to bomb the Panama Canal with support from a ship. Why Mexico and not some other weaker central american country a lot closer to the Panama Canal? |

Waaaay back when I was a kid and lived in San Diego, my neighbor told me his fishing boat was stopped and boarded by a sailors from Japanese submarine off Baja "during the War", but they were let go because they were all Norwegian. Never put it together with anything till I read about this "base" a few years ago. Pretty crazy stuff. Maybe someone should do dome sonar work in the bay to see if they can find any trace of the indian raid. |

Just to nitpick, the 'eastern' side of the Panama canal is the Pacific side. Due to the way the isthmus bends, the Atlantic end is actually farther west than the Pacific end. Check the map :) |

Obviously, someone confused this with the Nazi submarine base in Antartica… |

So right, Scott. Atlantic and Pacific side would probably be more broadly appropriate! |
