Just wondering if there are any ww2 rules that use a 100% dice roll for combat mechanics (to hit, mainly)

Thanks

Stryderg09 Jul 2016 7:50 p.m. PST

Yes, I played one at Heat of Battle (WWII Museum in New Orleans). I can't remember the title of the rules, but I didn't like them. Far too many modifiers (if shooter was: stationary (+20), walking (+10), running (+5), etc). The up side was that you rolled once to hit and damage…damage was determined by how much over the target number you rolled and if you rolled 100 you got to add another roll.

I seem to recall the Yaquinto '88 series used percentile dice.

Tractics, IIRC. Possibly what Stryderg is describing. Or its remake Battalions in Crisis.

Warwick Kinrade (of Battlegroup fame) wrote one called Normandy Firefight which uses that method for determining both hit and location. It's an ultra detailed set in which you only play about 5-6 guys per side. It's pretty cool.

A lot of rules use percentile dice results. In Ww2 the old Tank Charts used them.our Coastal Command PT Boat rules used them.

Face of Battle does.

I've got a couple of old sets which use percentile dice, one skirmish the other micro armour. It is some decades since I played them, and I'm not convinced the extra modifiers add any accuracy.

I do have a military Wargames set which gives percentage probabilities, although hilariously the increments are 16,33,50,66 and 87% Ahem.

Panzermarsch is an excellent set that uses % die for tank combat,

Played Napoleonic games with percent dice, recalled that landwher with 4% chance of beating Old Guards seemed to do so with regularity. Perhaps this doesn't happen in WWII games.

Sundance. Both Tractics and Battalions in Crisis uses one 20 sided die.

The old SPI game Commando used percentile dice. I used it for years as skirmish rules for 20mm WWII.

Marc is correct. I completely forgot.

Panzer (Jim Day designer) was last issued by Lost Battalion Games but was a pretty straight continuation of the Panzer/Armor/88 Yaqiunto series (Jim Day Designer) which was a continuation of the Jim Day Avalon Hill Panzer and IDF series. I think I got that right. They are all basically the same tried and true percentile to hit/percentile to damage rolls. IMO the fastest of the highly detailed AFV skirmish games due to the use of handy equipment cards and standard tables.

I will second Normandy Firefight. Well written and the combat resolution is carried out in one roll of the die.
