"The American Revolution is one of the most thoroughly documented subjects in American history. Countless books have been published on the topic and there are new ones coming out every year.

For readers interested in learning more about the revolution, these books are a great place to start.

Since the topic is very broad, the focus of each book tends to vary.

Some books cover the entire span of the American Revolution while others focus on particular battles, years, places or people involved…"

My favorite is, without question, Ward's two volume set "The War of the Revolution". I have the original edition but I believe it was republished recently.

Nothing beats "The Road To Guilford Courthouse" by John Buchanan. Possibly the best AWI book that I have ever read.
"Devil Of A Whipping" is an extremely close second.

With Zeal and Bayonets By Matt Spring changed my entire view on how the war was fought.

"Fusiliers" by Mark Urban is quite good.

Thomas Fleming's "Now We Aew Enemies" and Arthur Tourtolet's (sic) "William Diamond's Drum" set me on a lifetime interest on our American Revolution. Later Ward's "War of the. Revolution" and Boatner's Encyclopedia were always near by and still give a pleasant nights reading.

Lastly the Sameul Smith Philip Freanaue Press books are outstanding works which sadly are hard to find but hidden treasures when found.

I would guess that American members have their own favourites about their own side, but for the British, the following books have given me the best insight into our view of the war, and how we fought it at various strategic and tactical levels:-

"War for America" by Piers Mackesy
"Fusiliers" by Mark Urban
"With Zeal and With Bayonets Only" Matthew Spring

All the McGuire books on Philly campaign, and his book on Paoli. Harris' book on Brandywine battle. New book on Monmouth – Fatal Sunday. The How Brothers by Gruber. Washington by Brumwell. Too many to recall off the top of my head.

Howe, not How. Sticky keys. :-(

Ward is still my favorite overview of the AWI. Fusiliers mentioned above is excellent. If you are interested in the war in the south I would recommend:

1. Long, Obstinate and Bloody by Lawrence Babits
2. Devil of a Whipping by Lawrence Babits
3. Southern Strategy by David Wilson
4. Partisans and Redcoats by Walter Edgar

Here is an interesting take on some of the naval aspects and characters involved:

Long, Obstinate and Bloody
Zeal and Bayonets
Southern Strategy
Almost a Miracle
War for America
Fusiliers

And what HG said, for certain. The new Monmouth book is excellent as is Braisted's recent Grand Forage 1778.
