I happened to be in the right place on the flight line at RIAT earlier today…

…and so I took this iPhone video, just to prove it does actually work!

What? Your iPhone?

And to think how we used to ridicule the Soviets for needing two engines for VTOL.

Chokidar08 Jul 2016 11:56 a.m. PST

Still looks like an ugly bastard compared with the Sea Harrier… but I know I am not objective…

Chokidar08 Jul 2016 11:59 a.m. PST

..have to admit too that Sharkey Ward's boys made it look easy. They were so used to flying them that it looked as if they were driving cars, it looked that simple and fluid..

Did the tarmac melt?

It's apparently MUCH safer to land an F-35 vertically than the old Harrier.

Thanks for sharing the vid

I just hope we've already paid, cos those babies are priced in dollars….

BAE has a finger in that pie anyway by owning the Lockheed Martin Aerospace Electronics systems.

There's an awful lot of British technology in the F35, including some of the advanced materials that were the only viable solution to several critical engineering issues that would have killed it.

Shooting in portrait mode makes sense for this, but it s u c k s when you upload it to YouTube. They force the orientation the wrong way on phones, so you get huge black bars and a tiny picture. Computers just all have their screens oriented the wrong way.

There was a special landing pad installed by the USMC and Army engineers ….. So, no melted Tarmac, but only one place to land!

The F35 does look impressive.

Finally…

Only one actual engine, of course: just a mechanical drive take off for the lift fan.

Yep, I also agree that a Sea Harrier is the prettier plane (even nicer looking than the later Harriers IMHO). But stealth doesn't make for attractive aeroplanes.

The video played fine on my fire phone: full screen in portrait and no black bars.

Thanks for the vid. Wish I'd been at RIAT :(

Haven't been for a decade and I really miss it
