… Warthog's Big-Ass Gun. "General Electric's 30-millimeter GAU-8 Avenger cannon has been the primary weapon of the U.S. Air Force's A-10 Thunderbolt II ground-attack plane for more than 40 years. It also arms the Goalkeeper naval close-in weapon system. It's a huge and awesome gun. The GAU-8 has seven independent barrels with rotary-locking bolts that are mechanically actuated. The weapon is powered by a pair of hydraulic motors and can, in theory, spew up to 4,200 tank-smashing, depleted-uranium rounds per minute…." More here link Amicalement Armand |

Got into a conversation today about the Gau-8 and am taking my 30mm and 20mm dummy rounds into work tomorrow. |

What I'd really like to know is roughly how many vehicles the Warthog will typically engage and knock out in one pass, on average. Seems to me, if they are lined up on a road, in convoy, or when attacking in line abreast, I suspect 3 – 5, or more, could be hit by one strafing pass. |

Mako11, I saw one gun camera where the pilot came abreast of three tanks, and in less than 3 seconds knocked them all out. He could have done more, but there were only three. I pity any target that an A-10 lines up on. |

Was in Germany at the gunnery range in the late 70's and heard a weird sound. Thought it was a helicopter at first but it abruptly started and stopped and couldn't be a helicopter. Found out it was A-10s doing gunnery runs. That was one scary aircraft that was forced on the airforce (should have been assigned to the Army as part of a tactical airforce). |

So it lead to a whole explanation of how a Gau-8 is loaded, down loaded and what 30mm and 20mm are used for. |

Love the A-10, especially when I'm the US player in an armor game. Nice new A-10 in 1/300th from Luftwaffe1946.com miniatures. Sturdy enough for micro armor support and air-to-air games. |
