What are some good rule sets that use the current flames of war armies/basing that have more realism but not so much that one turn equals one second of action? |
number4 | 06 Jul 2016 3:17 p.m. PST |
You can use Battlegroup quite happily with FOW based armies – a friend of mine does just that, and Battlegroup is the tops for realism. It's simple to pick up and learn, but rewards real world tactics. You play the period, not the rules |
Weasel | 06 Jul 2016 3:21 p.m. PST |
crossfire and my own five core company command both work fine with FOW basing. |

Another vote for Battlegroup. It's the thinking man's FoW. |

We've been playing Blitzkrieg Commander II using out FOW bases and Vehicles. |
Rich Bliss | 06 Jul 2016 3:41 p.m. PST |
I've seen a number of people using FOW bases with Command Decision. Really any rules that don't use individually based infantry can be used with little issue. |

I thought BattleFront was a skirmish game requiring individually mounted infantry? Battlegroup means, I assume, the Battlegroup Kursk and related family of rule sets? |
lapatrie88 | 06 Jul 2016 4:31 p.m. PST |
Fireball Forward gives a nice, fluid game. One FOW infantry stand represents a squad Two Hour Wargames are developing a version of Nuts that uses FOW stands. This will be fun, especially for solo play. |
Dennis | 06 Jul 2016 4:58 p.m. PST |
"I thought BattleFront was a skirmish game requiring individually mounted infantry?" Nope; the maneuver element is company sized, and each miniature or stand represents a squad of men, specialized team, or 2-3 vehicles or guns. It's one of the Fire and Fury games, and uses the F&F activation system. See: link I really like it, but, of course, YMMV. Dennis |

I Ain't Been Shot Mum (IABSM) from toofatlardies works well. I have spare single figs that I add in as well but the tules work perfectly well using FoW basing. David |

When I started into WWII gaming some years ago I was constantly asking these type of questions and getting very generous replies but often conflicting views (imagine the horror) Naively though I would get frustrated with a multitude of recommendations of the "best system" as if there ever could be a single one that could hold the title for one and all Of course the problem lies with the pesky irritating fact that we all have completely different tastes in almost everything including wargames and FoW alternatives. Personally I really found Youtube vids of the systems gave me the best idea of whether the recommended system would suit my particular taste. So much so that I really wanted to make a video on each system I've played and so as to help other pilgrims on their search but alas real life keeps getting in the way So as mentioned Battlegroup IMO is an excellent alternative Good vid here that might give you an idea whether it might shake your cage YouTube link I really like IABSM (I Ain't Been Shot Mum) by TooFatLardies. If you like the random side of conflict and you like to see the influence of Company and Platoon Commanders then it might suit your needs. It does use fire Tables to inflict battle damage which isn't everyone's cup o tea but worth a look Crossfire is very different. Without hesitation I'd advise you at least try it once because some fall deeply in love and some run for their last edition of FoW My modest attempt to visually describe it can be found here: YouTube link Another vid of a much inferior quality on Crossfire can be found here:(I jest of course…excellent series of vids) YouTube link Weasel's Five core company command is an excellent option as well. why not try them all ;) |

Hmmmm, I'm intrigued. Nuts, Big Battles does sound interesting. Would love something similar for the Cold War too, from 1950s – 1980s in Europe. |

If you want the same level of representation (teams, company level) then PIN, IABSM, WRG. Otherwise just take your pick from the scores of element based rules. |

"If you want the same level of representation (teams, company level) then PIN, IABSM, WRG." Curse you, predictive text. I of course meant PBI. You'll need to track hits for IABSM, but the FOW 'armies' will work as is. |

We've played with Rapid Fire without much trouble- IBSM would be ine too as I think would the new Iron Cross set. |

Combat Command is designed for multi-based infantry. Works well – but I'm prejudiced. TomT |
christot | 07 Jul 2016 2:39 p.m. PST |
Crossfire, and my own nascent set "Chrisfire" spring to mind, but pretty much any set that doesn't overly depend on single figures will be fine – although even single based horrors like rapid fire or battlegroup can be used if you really want to A tiny bit of imagination will allow pretty much any FT/squad based rules to be adapted. If a set of rules floats your boat, then details like basing are not that tricky to overcome |
Wargamer Blue | 07 Jul 2016 6:30 p.m. PST |
Just dabbling in Battlegroup Panzergrenadier now. A FOW medium base represent a squad in these rules. One tank equal three tanks. The rule book is glorious. |
Dexter Ward | 08 Jul 2016 2:50 a.m. PST |
Crossfire, Battlefront:WW2. The latter (by the same guys who did Fire & Fury) is a very good set of rules |

IABSM mine are based for FOW in 15mm and I have singles based for Big Men. |

"Where do a find a copy of Chrisfire???" apologies..that was somewhat tongue in cheek… Chrisfire exist in as much as about 40% on my PC and about 60% in my head… Although to be fair, they exist 100% in about 7 or 8 different reule-sets |
RetroBoom | 09 Jul 2016 6:39 a.m. PST |
regardless, I'm always interested in peoples crossfire variants. If you're willing I'd love to hear yours. I can give you my email if you want. To the topic, I can't recommend Crossfire and Weasel's games enough. Definitely check those out. |
