"The Swedish post-war Strv 74 medium tank is interesting due to the fact that medium tanks died out as a class after the end of WWII. They evolved into main battle tanks, built by all leading tank building nations at the time. The Strv 74 was designed and accepted into service at the same time as the Soviet T-55, American M60, and a little earlier than the German Leopard…." link YouTube link From here link Are there any model in 1/72? I always think the Strv 74 looks like someone put it a giant vice and squashed it. The hull and turret both look too narrow for the height and length of the vehicle. |

The Strv 74 was a cheap stopgap to upgun existing tanks while waiting for the next tank to appear. There was an urgent need perceived and the m/42 was found to be woefully under equipped for the task post ww2. It is a very good question how cost effective this upgrade was since it wasn't exactly carrying a big gun, or armor protection at that.. It's a fugly looking tank, but a cool looking defensive turret. The reason for its narrow chassi is that the tank was built to be in line with the current civilian taffic laws!! Haven't found any 1/72 scale, but there seems to be a h0 kit out there link |
