Hi to all,as a boardgamer i never found miniatures interesting…until i bought Close Action…counters did not looked right to me for one naval game ,so i decided to try paint miniatures…and also bough Signal Close action rulebook in the process.
Frech hull,Langton NF15 (i think),lots of problems during assembling, broken masts etc.All comments and critics are welcomed.

That's a damn good job for a first attempt!

Agree with Col Campbell. I wouldn't let camera in the same room as anything I painted in my first four or five years.

That looks quite good to me. I'm especially impressed with the rigging.

Bravo!

That is very well done, especially for a first attempt.

Well done! You have obtained a good sensation of movement in the sail of the bowsprit.

Possible tips: if the thread of rigging has some glitter because glue you can use a black or dark brown ink to kill the brightness.

I would add one last thread, from the tip of the bowsprit to the top of the first mast. As regards the rest, you have done a good job, congrats.

Nice clean paint job. ModelJShip is right. It is a great start. Better than my first ships. Well done

That's your first one?! I instantly hate you…Seriously though, that is awesome! How did you do the rigging…tied and glued or drilled teeny tiny holes? Very nice job!

whitejamest06 Jul 2016 9:37 a.m. PST

A fantastic job! Hope theres many more like this in the future!

jowady06 Jul 2016 2:47 p.m. PST

Very nice!

Thank you all for supportive words and tips.English is not my native language so accept my apologies for any grammars i will have.

I added the thread as you suggested ModelJShip,i would like to add it more since i found that working on rigging is quite enjoyable, however i stopped due to mistakes,or unlucky events which followed building of this French ship.

By choosing this model (NF15) to be first miniature which i would paint is one of those "mistakes" – not good model to work on (in my opinion),guns on port side are hard to paint due to their irregular shape and that's annoyed me a lot,on the starboard side they are acceptable.Overall model is smaller than next one which i intend to paint – NF5.

For some reason i assumed that foremast and mainmast are same size and i just need to trim one of them in order to lower it…which i did;mainmast payed the price…
When i realized what i had done i tried to solder it,after that is failed i used "superglue",but all that work left mainmast in bad condition.

Further i broke tip one of the yard but i was able to repair it,then i had drop ship from the working table..
So i decided to do rigging in a way that actually holds the masts and sails even if they are glued at the bottom, using knots and glue only where needed,so i did not drilled any holes just wrapped the thread around masts.

I'm not happy to see so much thread at the top of the mizzen mast,it also hinders some details at the top of the mainmast. But initial approach was is to paint the ship so that it looks like she's in service for some time, not to achieve look of a new ship even if that would be aesthetically accepted….but painting the miniature is not as painting on the canvas.

Also when i later looked at the pics i posted i saw how camera colors can be off,it appears that whole model is bright, especially color around windows – it's not lemon yellow :D
So i took few shots with a different camera before i will start to work on the basing.
Hopefully next one will look better…

I always look at my finished ships and think! What if I done this or that different. No two will/are the same. When I look at my fleets,I can see how I've got better. My first fleet "the British" look like they have been on blockade for months (Oh dear!). But we go on trying to do better. Yours look like mine after 20 plus goes. I hide my bad painting under lots of rigging.
