Criteria: The unit must have been fielded in at least 3 games and must have been on the losing side every time you've used it.

Any candidates in your collection?

My WW2 U.S. Airborne company. They always put up a good fight but never win. They just lack that punch; the MGs aren't as good as an MG42 or a Vickers, the AT guns are only 37mm or 57mm and the artillery support are the 75mm pack howitzers. I'm hoping I'll get a better result with them dug in, on the defensive and fending off German assaults.

MY 10mm Gauls have been fielded in 6 battles and have always been crushed.

Not sure, but don't think my DBA Skythian army has ever won. Their very-nearly won games are very exciting and memorable!

Not quite an army, but my Ragnarr Lođbrók has been killed 3 games running!
Now I have a repainted version of him, Lagatha and the gang, I have great hopes for the next game!

ITALWARS04 Jul 2016 11:43 a.m. PST

very sad about that..but my theorically well armed, well cared, and lovely painted Belgian Colonial Force Publique..managed to loose his firt 3 TSATF games..twice VS Dervishes and even Vs naked tribesemen armed with bows and lances and laed by an opponent who was an absolute beginer with TSATF rule systhem

rmaker04 Jul 2016 3:12 p.m. PST

I don't think I have any that have never been on the winning side, but I have several that regularly fail to contribute to their side's victory.

Roderick Robertson Fezian04 Jul 2016 3:33 p.m. PST

While their side might win, I've got a unit of Fantasy Cavalry that routs every time it is contacted (or sometimes just when it is threatened).

I've christened them "Barrett's Cavalry"…

I lose more than the Washington Generals vs The Harlem Globtrotters. I have Gauls (big units) for Hail Ceasar. Anytime I sniff a Roman unit they become blithering idiots. Love this army, well painted, looks great on the table, die or run like dogs!.

Wargamer Blue04 Jul 2016 7:07 p.m. PST

Back in the day, my WAB Romano-British. At least they are good to look at.

Dan 05504 Jul 2016 9:00 p.m. PST

I had a unit of medieval "French" knights (actually a generic unit) that never won a combat. It was even routed by a unit of peasants once (although the knights WERE charging in column across a bridge into the deployed and waiting peasants – this shouldn't matter … right?).

This is not to mention my medieval lord "Kenny" Hightower – known for never surviving a battle.

45thdiv04 Jul 2016 9:10 p.m. PST

My Irish Brigade and my 20th Maine have never survived a battle in our ACW games. In fact, the last 12 battles were confederate wins every time.

15/19th Kings Royal Hussars, armoured Recce.

Can't fight their way out of a paper bag. On one occasion they managed to wipe out half their opponents (8 panthers) for no loss, but still managed to throw it away when the enemy reinforcements (8 stugs) arrived; despite having every single stug bang to rights, enfiladed at point blank range by nearly twenty Cromwells, and getting the first shot in, the hussars failed to even hit a single one!

Then of course the Stugs get to have a go at shooting..and they didn't miss.

The Hussars main claim to fame though is the occasion they fought three games in less than 2 and a half hours, and not only were they wiped out each time, the didnt inflict a single casualty on their opponents in the process. We played a Market Garden compaign where they providing suport to the main attack, and their performance was so bad we estimated they had taken something like 800% casualties over the course of the campaign.

As they never managed to get off their start line ( they were still there when XXX corp reached Arnhiem!) there must have been around 400 burning tanks in front of the german guns.

Legio XII Fulminata was one. The first couple of dozen times we used the unit was for the ambush at Beit-Horon, where the Romans were supposed to lose. We would play this scenario is pairs where you play one game on the Roman side and another on the Jewish side. You totaled victory points (tactical achievements) for your unit in both games.

After that (though we still run the scenario occasionally), we put them in some battles that were more evenly matched, and they won a few.

I'm sure one of two of my Mega City One gangs have never won a battle, though they may be considered different gangs in different games as the figures were recycled by they would (likely) have been statted out differently. We did have one GMCO gang, relying heavily on cybernetics (which always seemed like a good idea), where we recycled the stats to lose multiple (every?) times … we have enough cyborgs that it didn't necessarily have the same figures each time.

I know my custom grey fhtagn have never won a "bug hunt" game (with roughly the same stats). Like Fulminata, they were supposed to lose and were used in symmetric scenarios. We do play bug hunts with "equal" odds or with the bugs favoured, it's just kind of a running joke that we've never done so with the grey fhtagn.

The Dakota never win Little Crow's War, but we always play that as a campaign. They will often win a few scenarios (some times, quite a few scenarios and by a large margin) early on. Even though we play a campaign of the various engagements, we don't play the lopsided ones – where either side conducted a slaughter against a much weaker force – just the dramatic battles and raids where the defending side was able to make a stand. Even that doesn't seem to affect the campaign outcome.

Back in the 70's I bought a large number of the tower Guard of Minas Trith from the Der Kriegspielers Lord of the Ring Lines. Good looking figures, solid, stolid, looked good! Painted up well.

The first battle they were in my best friend, Terry Manton (sadly now long since departed from among us) came over and looked at them and said "BUNNY EARS!" I looked down n horror and yes, the winged helmets they had on DID look like Bunny ears. Very sad, from then on they have never won … ever.. They have been rated as elite troops in the game I have them and they have been shifted around from army to army and rebased several times. Doesn't matter, whateve battle they are in they will get flattened by the most worthless disaffected cowardly scum troops they come up against.

The name "Bunny Ears" just ripped the fight out of them.

vtsaogames05 Jul 2016 5:06 p.m. PST

No such unit that I'm aware of. I did have a bog standard Napoleonic Bavarian infantry unit back in the day that never failed a morale test and always formed square when charged.

Howler06 Jul 2016 8:55 p.m. PST

Just about all of them😕

(Phil Dutre)07 Jul 2016 2:18 a.m. PST

I don't own "units", and never think of my collection that way. I do have a lot of figures, which are drafted into units of various sizes and composition, depending on the scale, rules, and scenario of the game being played.

TamsinP07 Jul 2016 4:17 a.m. PST

Based on the OP's criteria, the following units of my FogR Choson Korean army have never been on the winning side:

Monk soldiers (2 battle groups)
Righteous army (4 battle groups)
Arquebusiers (2 battle groups)
[light artillery (1 battle group) – not sure if they've been used in a game where they were on the winning side)

That is mostly down to my poor generalship in the first (and only) three games in which they have appeared.

14Bore07 Jul 2016 1:56 p.m. PST

In Empire rules for Napoleoic wars units have a rating. I raise or lower that by 1/2 point for Valor or cowardly conduct (otherwise known as a bad roll). The Arakchev Grenadiers have lost a moral tier.

Clash95708 Jul 2016 8:12 p.m. PST

Not a unit per say, but you don't want to carry a shotgun in my army. I think I have something like 90% morality rate for any miniature carrying a shotgun. That's higher than any melee/close combat or SMG wielding miniature I use by at least 30-40%. On the plus side, those brave miniatures win a fruit salad of medals for their bravery.
