link Check it out, it looks pretty good. I'm going to use 15mm with 4 dba size bases for one unit and double the table size. |
setsuko | 03 Jul 2016 10:20 a.m. PST |
I'm liking the idea as well, as I've played DBA and FoG with my 6mm samurai, but neither have been perfect for the period IMHO. There's a youtube video going through the rulebook, for the curious. YouTube link |

I bought a set, will see how they work out. It doesn't appear to be a "super mass scale" ruleset, so not sure why it is marketed as a set of rules for 6mm, unless it is meant to attract people to this era with cheaper minis. Seems like the units are a derivative of 1 stand = 1 unit, so any scale should work. At least I hope so due to my investment in 28mm. |

It seems like it goes by base width so any scale should work. I think for larger scales do what I suggested. |

Just ordered my copy. There is also a Facebook page 2d6 wargaming. |

Someone let me know how this goes. I'm embarrassed to say that I've got a matched pair of about 600 28mm Samuria mounted WRG style on 80mm frontages that have never seen a battle. |
sillypoint | 03 Jul 2016 1:52 p.m. PST |
Matched pair, 10 mm , 15mm , tin soldier samurai army 15mm based for fantasy. 10mm has been used- warmaster rules. My 25/28 mm stuff are based for skirmish games, and like my 25/28mm Vikings, well you can't really skirmish with over 300 figures…60 ninjas. |

I managed to spot some army creation rules in the book during the video. Seems players agree upon a number of bases – 10 for a smaller game, 20 for a larger game – and then each roll 2d6 and add that number to their total amount of bases. Then it seems like certain clans will favor some unit types over others for inclusion. |

Looking forward to it. It might motivate me to finally get to some of my lead pile of the Japanese variety. |

'Banzai' is a somewhat inappropriate phrase for the Sengoku Jidai. No-one cared a grain of rice for the Emperor at the time, they were all too busy fighting for their slice of his 'empire'. A bit more explanation (encouragement?) about why one should choose these rules over another set, plus shots of the internal pages at point-of-sale would be nice. Having seen the flick-through video, I have not seen much that makes me want to order my bushi into battle. Layout is sound, but nothing jaw-dropping. Applause for the high-end paper and production. I know what that costs. Artwork is nice, but I don't think there's any pics at all of actual miniatures? Not essential, I know, but inspirational pics of armies of miniatures drawn up in battle-lines can never hurt… Clan army lists are a nice touch. Author talks about period battle formations, but I don't think there's actual mechanics to encourage their use on the field. Not sure… |

There are actually 2 vids with demos of gameplay. Looks to me like it is a derivative of dba with single base units. Combat done comparing unit value dice +/- modifiers with loser retreating, etc. There is separate morale phase. Don't particularly like the use of all those tokens. Need to look into details when my book arrives to see if there is any real differentiation that gives it a more "samurai" feel. YouTube link YouTube link

Maybe I am doing something wrong. I went to the wargame vault website and it says title is not available. I was just checking to see if there was now a pdf version and the price, but now this. Weird. I wonder what happened. |

I see the same message, dddd99. |

I contacted the author, who apparently felt that there were enough unfortunate errors in the book to warrant pulling it from the store so that more people couldn't buy it until he had gone through it again. I got a refund for my hardcover copy, and I'm awaiting a PDF version to purchase with the credits I got in return. |
cwlinsj | 10 Jul 2016 7:50 p.m. PST |
This is indeed disturbing. Why no announcement? I had also ordered a book, the hardcopy version. I was already steamed to see them offering a softback version for $5 USD cheaper just days after the hardback came out. As an early supporter, I feel burnt, and now this. I just contacted wargamesvault to request a refund, and if they don't, I'll do a chargeback through PayPal. No way I'm getting stuck with a hardbound book so full of errors that it needs a complete rework. |
infinite array | 12 Jul 2016 6:36 a.m. PST |
I suppose that's the risk we take as early supporters, instead of taking the time to wait and see how things shake out. It's also the author's first effort, and from the credits in the book, there were enough people working on it that I'm surprised no one caught the errors before the book went to print. That said, Wargames Vault did give me a full refund, so I imagine you should as well. Now we sit back and see if the book gets back on the store as a PDF (which can at least be corrected and updated accordingly). |
cwlinsj | 12 Jul 2016 9:41 a.m. PST |
I got my refund. Wargamevault was very good about this, although I had to ask for a refund rather than a credit. I'm sure wargamevault is miffed about this more than us as they and the publisher lost money in servicing this. The author should make some sort of announcement, explain what happened so the wargamers out there can understand. We are a forgiving lot, and tend to give fellow wargamers a second chance (heck, if I could play WRG ancients yellow book, I can endure anything!) But if this author disappears without a word and then pops up again with the same ruleset, I would be skeptical about his level of commitment towards rules playability and support. |

I just received my softcover copy today. The rules look like a lot of fun, but YEESH there are a lot of typos. Not just word substitutions of the sort that spell check misses ("bread" for "bred," for example), but misspellings ("daimyo" is consistently spelled "diamyo") and even duplicate paragraphs. Lots of style problems, too: TONS of sentence fragments and run-on sentences that make it a more difficult read than it needs to be. Considering the credits list *four* proofreaders, I have to think that they accidentally uploaded an early draft file. That's the only reasonable explanation with that many proofreaders…right? Hopefully we'll see a corrected and cleaned-up version available soon, because after wading through the errors I really like the system itself, and the layout is absolutely top notch! As cwlinsj says, we are a forgiving lot, and I think these rules have lots of promise. |

So I'm on holiday in NZ right now. Do we get a refund on the hardcover book? |
cwlinsj | 15 Jul 2016 7:21 p.m. PST |
The author contacted me privately after I asked him why he doesn't just make an announcement that he needed to re-edit the book. I think he's too embarrassed to admit that it was chock full of mistakes. He said that it will be re-issued on 7-22 and anyone who had bought & recieved an earlier edition will be provided a replacement. I will buy the rework, but I'll wait for the softcover. |

I guess I was told 2nd edition is being mailed out to those that bought. That's good news. Have to fire the proof reading team. |
